Congrats on the print Tony!
Tony Whatley wanted modern motivation for his 1969 Camaro SS so he selected a 348-cubic-inch Gen III from MTI.
“I’ve been a customer of theirs since 1998 and I have built up a lot of trust in their engines,” Whatley said. “They’ve been around over 10 years, for one thing, and they offer warranties, which are almost unheard of in racing engines.”
His skills as a project manager in the oil and gas industry no doubt served the Houston resident well, as it wasn’t exactly your basic engine swap. Along with readily available wiring harnesses from the aftermarket and computer, Whatley put around $70,000 of hardware and modifications into his genuine SS.
He wanted a show-quality muscle car that would do 10-second runs or better in the quarter-mile, and the supercharged Camaro delivers the car has 505 horsepower at the wheels and runs in the 10.70s,
Whatley said.
Yet, the day he was interviewed for this story, it turns out Whatley commuted to work in the classic Camaro. Why not, when it gets 25 mpg on the freeway and 19 around town, Whatley said.
