what is the best oil weight to go with in our cars here in the houston area?

I run Royal Purple 10w30.

10w30 is good, but you could do 5w30 too.

Ive ran 5w 30 mobile 1, 5w30 amsoil, and 0w30 amsoil which is in my car right now...

Right now its M1 5W30 in the car, Ive ran their 15W50 performance driving formula and after 3k miles had like no oil consumption.

We just put in Royal Purple for the first time with our last oil change -- 5W30 (switching from Mobil 1).

Royal Purple 10W 30 in the engine, Royal Purple in the Trans, and Royal Purple in the rearend.

I am really curious about this. I have forgoten what the numbers really mean. My auto mechanics teacher in highschool (Cy Fair) told me but that was years ago. I think it was something like 10W (minus 10 winter) and 30 was the rating of the viscosity, which would mean that is could flow at -10 degrees. Some one let me know because i could be totally wrong.
