Default Piping Design rates are going through the roof in Houston!!!

It's crazy but the rates in Houston for Piping designers are on the rise!!! The engineering firms in Houston are having rate war's as it's common to see rates for jr designers @ $25-$35/hr Mid level designers @ $38-$45/hr and Sr. designers @ $48-$60/hr. The rates are seriously going up as there is a Demand for these guy's and its getting better everyday!!!! I get calls everyday but I was very selective when I chose my new gig....We haven't seen this since the mid 70's as the ol timers say...

Time to make some $$$$$$$$$$$$$ guy's!!!!

SSSSsssshhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Don't TELL people!! Everyone will move here and then we'll have more people than job openings (like we've had for the past few years).

I'm about to use that rate war as justification for a healthy raise from my boss. I'm getting calls about once per week right now, though, so I should be able to convince him that it's in the company's best interest to keep me around - of three people in the drafting/design department, I'm the only one that isn't a rookie. And we had to go through a dozen people to find a decent rookie when we hired the two we have!

Omaha is my hometown - I was born at Offutt AFB and lived in Omaha till I was 11. Lived there a couple of times after high school. Now I'm in Houston - no snow and more money!

If your major is engineering, you're fine.

The thing about piping is that it is VERY cyclic. When it's on, life is good. When it's off.....let's not go there...

Piping (in Houston anyway) is almost 100% oil/chemical related. If those industries are good, so is the paycheck.

And the looks of it, it's going to be good for along time. When they pass the bill on Ethanol, most everyone will be running a small % of it in their gas which will then be a need for more Ethanol plants like here in Omaha. Plus will be cheaper then reg unlead.

I do a lot of high level recruiting in power, and ethanol and biodiesel are getting a lot of attention. I forget but I think maybe they have passed new production tax credits that might be 'fueling' the build.

...And there are other regions of the world competing for natural gas... Hence the hotness of ethanol and biodiesel... and geothermal, and biomass, and landfill gas.

I have been getting offers for piping interviews in the last month or two. I have over 20 years in piping from new construction to Maintenance. I am currently Designing HPU's, Tuta's, Flushing units ..Etc for offshore platforms. I have always wanted to design pipe since my background & love is in that field. I have a bad knee that keeps me from going to the interviews since I'm not sure of the amount of field work required. I guess my question is can I do the job with a bad knee? With my experiance in piping what level should I shoot for Jr designer? I know there will be a learning curve. Thanks for the feedback.
