I had the pleasure of meeting 3 state troopers in a week's span of time. 1 when I was on my way to Austin for an interview, and 2 on 2 seperate trips to Houston for interviews.

I always play the pleasant, respectful card when I'm pulled over. Those 3 troopers all let me off w/ warnings for no front plate - which brings my count to 5 warnings/0 tickets for no front plate.
In regards to being pulled over for speeding - I've gotten off on a verbal warning once, and I've gotten a couple tickets. Some tickets the cops were pleasant, some they were not

Lucky. I get fucked on the no front place. I usually get pulled over for speeding and leave with about 4 tickets. I'm nothing but respectful and pleasant. I know a lot of people think they're being respectful when they aren't, but I was in the military, and they MAKE you be respectful. I think some cops just have hard-ons for young guys driving fast cars.

Cop pulled me over in Muleshoe,TX doing 69 in a 65:

: Do you have any idea how fast you were going?
: About 69 or 70?
: Exactly.
: ??? (confused look)
: You do realize the speed limit is 70 during the day and 65 at night, right?
: (realizing this guy seriously pulled me over for 4mph over) ...yeah....
: I notice here that your inspection and registration are both expired
:I just got back from Iraq and haven't had the chance to update them yet
: Explain that to the judge.

"Quotas" are illegal, but most departments have an unwritten rule as to how many citations the officers are to write. I've heard my old Chief get on to officers for not writing enough tickets. He wanted each officer to write one ticket per shift or something.. That department sucked, so I turned in my badge and uniforms

Here we go again. I've been a member here for several years and have tried to just pass on information fairly and honestly with members. I love playing w/ my ride as much as everyone else here and, like being a part of the community

BUT

Just to give ya'll an example of WHY there are periods when I am gone for awhile and, why some of us here that are law enforcement tend to get a little ticked... here is a PM I received from the guy on the first page who, for some reason, wanted to keep stickin me... even after I was supporting the original posters position

Tell me after you read this WHY I deserved to get this PM sent to me:

Sent by: TheRedWS.6

Cops

Hey dude, you want to get bent out of shape fine. I don't care if you are a cop or not. Go ahead and find my ip and call your buddies in H-town and have them pull over a red ws6 to get to me if you feel like it. I've got a clean slate and am a law abiding citizen. Do what makes you happy. I just wanted to know how someone can see a cat by popping the hood as your explanation was not clear. The only thing you wrote was non compliance. That has nothing to do with seeing cats from the motor bay. I could care less because I've got cats anyways and don't even know why I care. I quess I'm mystified by the physics because I can't see my cats from my motor bay. X-ray is all I can conclude too. So do what you got to do if you think I was directing that statement at you. You may be a cop, but your **** smells just like mine.

Maybe this fella needs to take a chill pill....what ya'll figure ?

Kev

What an *******... there's always people out there like that, and you just have to do your best to look past them. I had an experience like that yesterday on these boards. Not sure what's been in the water lately...

RedWS4 Man chill out... you were an *** in that thread... and to PM Kev and talk **** is BS. Why do people think they need to be cool or "hard" by fronting... Do you really think Kev gives a **** about you? Do you think if you are nice to him... or a ******* *** it will change the fact that Kev will still do his job and he was only offering his prospective?

Lemmie guess... the next time your driving that slow *** TA of yours and you get pulled over for street racing or acting like a worn out ricer... your gonna blame Kev for that too?

What a dick... This thread has gone way off scope... I think the poster got his question answered and had a chance to vent about it. My vote goes for:

It is all in how you talk to the cops. I'm always very complaint and cooperate fully, and have gotten away with a lot of warnings: 3 for no seatbelt, 2 for speeding (up to 22 over) and one for no plate. The only time I got a ticket was after a car show got busted up they were waiting for us coming out of there and I got popped for 63 in a 40 on the feeder (it was actually 50 though). No way I was getting out of that ticket since it was part of a plan, but I still let him search my car and opened everything up for him to see. I'm sure a lot of officers don't even know what cats are. Even after all of that though the cop was still pretty nice to me, it is all in how you act. If you cop an attitude prepare to be fucked. In NY it was MUCH worse, I was getting pulled over all the time for BS like loud exhaust. Trust me we have it pretty good down here. I do think that HPD spends a little too much time giving out tickets and too little time patrolling the neighborhoods that need it.

I got pulled over a while back by a local cop (SAPD) doing 108 in a 60. I didnt get arrested but got a ticket. Went to the judge and he gave me 6 months probation and a $200 dollar fine...... Didnt go on my record either. But I did get arrested last year for reckless driving and had a lot more fines and community service. That sucked!! I also had to go to a probation officer and check in every month. They both got dismissed!!

Ive been pulled over many of times in Houston. 90 in a 55, 85 in a 65, following to close, and other misc. stuff. I got warnings from all of them.

one conversation was pretty funny

Off. "you know why I pulled you over."
Me "yse sir"

Off. "really?"
Me "speeding"

Off. "Is this your Lic.&Reg?"
me. " yes sir."

Off. "grab your Stuff you can go"
me "thank you sir"

i always have my stuff in my visor. and when i get pulled over I take my keys out of the ignition and put them on the top of the car with everything including my knife.

seems like cops apprecitate that they always seem to let me go.

That was GAY. Sounds like he had a bad morning and decided to take it out on ya'll. And that's why I like not being out on the highways anymore....I hate writing tickets.

Kev
On the contrary, popping the hood is the same as asking to search a suspects car, because under the hood is not in plain sight. According to the Texas Penal Code, a peace officer cannot search a car unless there is sufficient probable cause. Probable cause being that of excessive noise of the car, fumes, smoke, etc. A minor no front license plate infraction is NOT a probable cause to warrant a search of the engine compartment of a vehicle. However, when the officer asked for you to pop the hood, you willingly agreed, which gave him legal consent to perform the search. you could have said NO and then and only then would he have had to go secure a search warrant, But he would not have gotten that warrant anyway, because no municipal court judge is going to grant a search warrant because of a front license plate being in the window instead of on the front of the car. In terms, that's insufficient evidence to warrant a valid search. If he would have looked under your hood w/o your consent, he would have been in clear violation of the 4th amendment and the penal code.

Also, if you fail to comply, you could always demand that you have the officers supv. come to the scene and explain to him the situation.

For your buddy with the Cobra, the officer HAD probable cause to search under his hood because the officer saw no tailpipes, which is a valid probable cause to warrant a search.

So tell us, Kev; what's the best way to try to get out of a ticket? I've always wanted a police officer's advice on that matter.

haha, that's easy, but i can't tell you.

exactly, it's called the "In plain view" rule. - They don't even have to come in. If you open your door and they see a crack pipe on the floor near the sofa, then that's legal grounds to enter your home.

there is a pro and con to that kind of ticket mentioned above.

con: you have to take defensive driving or pay the ticket
pro: it will not add any points to your driving record. usually anything over 5+mph are points added to your license.
