Default any campers in here? 4th of July Weekend Guadalupe Float

Me and the little lady are going on a river floating/camping trip over the 4th of July and have NO camping equipment other than fishing stuff and a cooler. Anyone have any insight on where to get the best deals etc on camping equipment? Need: Tent, Air matress, Sleeping Bags (not sure I'll need one being 4th of July and all) and all the other stuff associated with camping.

Academy is the best place to go. Walmart would be second. You may regret camping on the Guadalupe in a tent with no A/C during the summer. Its going to be hot, humid and no wind at night. You'll lay there on your cot or air mattress and be sweating at night. Been there, done that, and won't do it again. Why not just get a condo, rent house, hotel, etc?

well I WANT to get a hotel, I've been camping for Years and know what its all about. However the little lady wants to "camp", she never has before and wants to now. I went up to Wal Mart earlier and they have some great deals on tents and air matresses.

Id see if I could borrow most of it from friends and such. I wouldn't make the investment until I knew we'd be using the equipment a couple times a year at least.

My 2 cents...

In Texas my advice would be to go camping in the spring or fall, not the middle of the summer. FYI some of the tent camping spots at Huaco Springs campgrounds on River Road have electrical hookups (their located on the other side of the bridge across from Jerry's).

You could purchase a small 110V A/C unit from Walmart or Home Depot, plug it in, put it in the tent and you'd probably freeze your **** off. Some people have done this and said it works great.

I got a pretty decent tent from Wamalart for a good price. The key to floating the guadalupe is twofold.....some sort of securely fastened shoe (old tennis shoes, etc), and most importantly, a cooler to hold all the delicious liquid bread.

Buy a motorhome. That's what I'll do next. Until then, I'm staying in my parents' or in-laws' motorhome...no more of this no A/C bullshit. LOL

Also, the river is great, but it might be a little crowded on the 4th of July weekend. It gets like a mosh-pit on water during the warm holidays.

There is also a Coleman Outlet center there and they have stuff that is somewhat decently marked down. It is right there on FM 306. I camped for Memorial weekend and was actually flooded inside camp, we couldn't leave. Make sure you use seam sealer and water repellent on your tent. You may not think you need it but you will be glad u used it. I also used my inverter in my truck and brought along one of those cheap box fans. I ran it about 7 hours one of the really bad rainy days and it didn't drain my battery. Kept the tent really cool and it is a 16x16 foot tent.

Mosquitos will eat you alive. A sealed 55-gallon drum of Off! would be a must.

Academy sells tents for pretty cheap, and you can pick up a tent fan that hangs up in the top of the tent. Its pretty cheap, runs off of D batteries, and it is faily effective.

As far as sleeping bags, you definitely won't be zipping yourself inside of the bag outside of the winter months in Texas. With that in mind, you can buy a Queen size air mattress for under 30 bucks--cheaper than a good sleeping bag, and more comfy.

Other than that, pick up a couple of propane lanterns and grab about 4 bottles of propane @ 3-4 bucks a pop. Those lanterns will be super bright and will last a while.

Academy has a nice selection. Walmart is probably cheaper, but the products are crappy and they are just cheap . If you plan on going camping again, head to Academy. If this is a one hit wonder, head to Wallyville.

LOL! I can take it. We don't even own a tent, so the only time we go camping is when my parents invite us and they are done with tents, so we stay in their motorhome.

stay away from Waco Falls camp ground, it's shitty place to camp, go farther up river to K&L ranch or Lazy L&L

There's no river rules until you reach Grune.
