If it's anything like Dell check your System Tools.

Right after the BIOS screen goes away (the very first series of text you see on the screen...in this case, it might be the HP logo) and BEFORE the windows XP boot screen shows up, you hit F8 like a squirrel on crack. You should then be brought to a boot option screen where it asks you boot options. Select command prompt. Once you get to the old style DOS screen (nothing but text), it should say either C:\ or C:\documents and setting\ ETC.....
With me so far?
When it displays a prompt (the computer waiting for your input), type in "scandsk /f /x /r" WITHOUT THE QUOTES then hit enter. It will then go thru the process of finding and fixing errors with your harddrive and hopefully fix your problem. Be patient and have your laptop plugged into a power source because this will take quite a bit of time to complete. If you still cannot boot normally after that process, get back to the boot option screen and select LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION. That should get you back to its last backup....and hopefully you didn't turn off system restore.

The steps it gave you to do a PC Recovery are the steps to use for the laptop. Since you reloaded XP with a Desktop disk you will probably not have those options. The HP_Recovery that you see in My Computer is most likely an image of what your laptop came from the factory with and what is used when you use the steps you listed above. To boot up your computer boot from the desktop disk and perform a repair so you will not loose any of the data that you currently have on the machine.
