I have heard this is the best BBQ ever. And I have heard to go during the day, that many people have died on that road at night

Lockhart is King
All good places, but... 20-30 miles so on Hwy 183 is Lockhart where there are 3 of the top 10 in Tx Monthly's 25 best BBQ joints: Kruez Mkt, Smitty's & Black's.
And they're not kiddin'! They are the best of the best.
'Bout the same distance on Hwy 290E goin' towards Houston is Elgin. There's the famous Southside Mkt, but most "afficianados" prefer Crosstown BBQ. They & any of the Lockhart joints will cut any part of any of the meat you prefer if you just tell 'em what you want.
Little further away is the city of Taylor where Louis Mueller's famous joint is. Almost as good is Miskeska's in Taylor as well.
If you're stuck in Austin, Rudy's is a good compromise. Iron Works, kinda close to 6th st, is better than Stubb's, but all 3 are over-priced. Not so much though that they're not worth tryin' out. Salt Lick is more of an experience than all that great of food. Usually undercooked, too lean, & WAY TOO PRICEY. It's in Driftwood, the orig place anyway, which is time & mileage much better spent on Lockhart. Sam's on 12th st is good, but one of the worst neighborhoods in Austin after dark, crime wise. Spicewood, further out than Driftwood has Opie's...good, but pricey.
By pricey I mean a guy oughta be able to get as much BBQ as he can stuff down for $10 or less. Can't do that in Austin proper. At least at any of these mentioned above.
