Default Autozone GC 0W-30!!

Hope I do not get my post deleted. I doubt that any vendors offer any package deals or much less sell oil.

Anyways though March 4th or so, Autozone has ANY Castrol oil (5 quarts), which I got the GC 0w-30 + Mobil 1 oil filter for $25.99. For that price it is worth buying more than one set.

The oil alone sells for around $6.20 or so a quart so do the math. You are basically saving $5 off the oil PLUS getting a free oil filter!

but you don't get a nice mobil 1 oil filter with it and Castrol is said to be better for our engines.

That being said I just got back from Autozone and got 10 quarts of 0w30 castrol synthetic and 2 mobil 1 m1206(long version) oil filters for $55 total. SWEET!

How is it better? You can pick up a AC Delco filter pretty damned cheap too.

What is so special about the longer filter? I got the filter the book listed for my car?

The longer filter allows for 6quarts total instead of 5.5. Also I just switched to the GC from redline and my engine quieted down drastically I also noticed it revs and downshifts much easier.

The longer filters have more internal surface area, and thus less pressure drop, but there's also problems. I used to run the K&N long filters, until I hit a ladder laying in I-10 and knocked a hole in the bottom. $140 tow back to my house later and I no longer rock the long filters.

Don't the mobil 1 filters have some type of silicon additive in the filter?
Where's the proof that the Castorol is better? I'd like to know where you are getting this information from.

Why run thinner oil in the summer when it's hotter?

if you look in your owners manual and occasionally on the back of the oil jug it will tell you ideal operating temperatures for different blends of oil. thinner blends are better for higher underhood temps but i dont think protect very well on cold start ups. thats why i switch off for winter but it really wouldnt make a difference because we dont live in antartica or a place that would go below zero

from wikepedia
The API/SAE designation for multi-grade oils includes two grade numbers; for example, 10W-30 designates a common multi-grade oil. Historically, the first number associated with the W (again 'W' is for Winter, not Weight) is not rated at any single temperature. The "10W" means that this oil can be pumped by your engine as well as a single-grade SAE 10 oil can be pumped. "5W" can be pumped at a lower temperature than "10W". "0" can be pumped at a lower temperature than "5W", and thins less at temperatures above 99°C (210°F)the second number, 30, means that the viscosity of this multi-grade oil at 100°C (212°F) operating temperature corresponds to the viscosity of a single-grade 30 oil at same temperature. The governing SAE standard is called SAE J300. This "classic" method of defining the "W" rating has since been replaced with a more technical test where a "cold crank simulator" is used at increasingly lowered temps. A 0W oil is tested at -35°F, a 5W at -30°F and a 10W is tested at -25°F. The real-world ability of an oil to crank in the cold is diminished soon after put into service. The motor oil grade and viscosity to be used in a given vehicle is specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle (although some modern European cars now make no viscosity requirement), but can vary from country to country when climatic or mpg constraints come into play. Oil circulates through the piston oil rings to cool and lubricate the compression rings. Inside gasoline engines, the top compression ring is exposed to temperatures as high as 500°F
so a hot batch of 0w30 is going to have more viscousity as a batch of 5w30, but your engine isnt going to really notice unless you constantly redline everywhere you drive

And I was under the impression you used thinner oil in the winter & thicker in the summer. Usually I just stick to the factory spec Mobil 1.

+1 .. I think GC is heavily overrated. I'm sure it's great oil but how much better can it really be over Mobil 1? I'm sure the difference is minimal, if any
