the bore should stay the same on a 383
your just increasing the stroke i think to 4.00" and 4.125" is a 406

that and the tune and probably the injectors. . . wouldn't hurt to change the heads/springs/pushrods to allow it to breath more. might consider changing the timing chain. A cam is always a good idea (isn't this a vicious cycle?)

Well yeah, I know im looking at a complete engine build, but I was just wondering if the block will need to be bored and honed, or if theres no damage just through the internals in it and start on the rest? Say, hows your Camaro going?

Nothing needs to be done to the bore. You can hone the cylinder, that wont hurt. Dont blow nuttin up.

Shop around. You'll probably find an assembled 408 short block for the cost of a 383 rebuild. Unless you do all DIY.

Just updated sig a few minutes ago 0.22 faster in the quarter and gained almost 2.0 mph. Still not hitting it hard enough (scared of breaking rear - but I got a 1.87 60')

well, if the block is still good I just want to use it. PLus I plan on boosting it also. I was just thinking a boosted 383 would be nice. And I just got the ok from the wife last nite on getting it. Hey Mike, still got that trailer?

You're just gonna need the cylinders honed to about 3.905", to fit the slightly oversized pistons. No boring necessary. That, with a 4" stroke crank will net you 383ci.

If you're not too familiar with all the numbers and math and what not, send the engine out to a sponsor here on the site, like LME/HKE/W2W. Those three shops are very repuatable and will put together a well built shortblock for you.

One final piece of advice, since your adding boost try not to cheap out too bad. Nothing wrong with cutting corners, but on the crtitical parts like the crank try to get something nice. I've seen some of the cheaper cranks have some serious problems and just reflect poor quality.

383 and stroke it make a 408 look like nothing. well depends.. 408 is like getting a 427 *sarcasm* run once and turn it off *sarcasm* i would never run walls that thin but if you got the money go ahead!

Looks OK except for the crank. I am just wary of those cheaper cranks. I've seen a few potentially catastrophic problems from one of those "budget" cranks, and heard about many more nightmares. If you do get it anyways, check it over VERY carefully. Look for spots that may have been welded in the counterweights. Check endplay. Check that the rear flange is perpendicular to the crank centerline. Check that the oil holes are drilled correctly. I could go on, just check everything!!

Personally, I like Callies' Compstar cranks. Very high quality, very accurately machined, just a nice all around piece.

Well, I called a couple of shops yesterday and I found out some interesting facts. Im now leaning towards the 408 and low boost. The 408 is only $400 more than a 383, so why not just work an extra day?
