I'm finally trying to move into an apartment and I'm starting to look at some apartments. The only thing I require is somewhere that allows pets, because I have a ferret. Also I need a place that comes with washer and drier.
Other than that, what kind of questions should I ask apartment managers? Down payments? Fees? Extra expenses? Help me out.

Check out their crime rate (ie. burglaries/auto) in the past year.. They have to release info to you. Also make sure there is more than enough parking. One BIG issue I had and I ended up having to cancel the agreement b/c they broke into my fiance car due to bs parking

Other than crime, how old is the property, when was it last renovated, tell them you want to see an actual apartment (instead of their model apartment) and check for cracks and if the windows/doors seal properly, preferebly talk to someone that already lives there, and also do a drive by during the evening hours/weekend to see what the area is like.

I just got back from looking at one and it seemed really nice. It was in a nice part of town. About a mile from some apartments that a 1bd/1br would cost ~$1k a month. It was a gated community.
I didn't think about crime rate tho. Shouldn't be bad...
Do any of y'all know if I apply and pay the application fee, say I don't have enough credit history, will I get the application fee back or is that a risk I have to take? Is there any way to figure out if I have enough credit before I apply? Like creditreport.com or something?

You should look on craigslist for a washer and dryer. You can get really nice/hardly used ones on there for around 200-400. That would give you more options because alot of apts. do not have them.

Most people go and check out apartments in the middle of the day. It's all nice and quiet and you think "cool". Well, it's quiet because everyone is at work or night shift folks are dead asleep. There's nobody home blasting their TV or walking across their living room above your head.
If possible, go in the evening when everyone is home from work. Stand around the apartment and listen to see if the walls and ceilings are thin.
