Post Fellow Forum Member Needs Help w/ Tools

Good Evening Everybody,

I just had a sweet offer for me to go back to an old trade I did a few years ago but at a different level than where I was at. I was a machinist trainee before being promoted to the Beaumont area on another one of my jobs (I held 3 jobs at that time). An interesting individual walked into my place of business today and offered for me to train on a CNC machinary and I could not let that pass up since things are a little slow in the business. What I am asking from anybody in the immediate Houston area is if they have any microns, calipers, dials etc that they can sell, let me borrow (I would sign a note with you) so that I can begin where I left off at. I appreciate any leads, helps or prayers.

Thank You.

Thanks Brent, my rims are still looking good, but my car is looking $hittier everyday (A new dent). Also still waiting for you and your girl to come down for another meal fest.

well just start out small then accumulate all your tools slowly. dont wanna go out spending big money on expensive mic's calipers and bore gauges not knowing if its something you wanna do for any extended period of time. if you need any insight on g-code programming or pro tips on the cnc stuff let me know. used to do that a long long time ago and never went back to it!! good career if you find a shop you like working at. oh and if you dont mind me asking . how good of a offer was it and so on . lil bros looking for work and im helping with his search

Thanks for the advice Joe. Actually I have been in this type of work for a little bit and know that it's dirty work. At least I can say is I've done the grunt work of shoveling shavings, cleaning the machines eventually working my way up faster than the people that were there two years vs my two months. I stayed with it for a while until (I had 3 jobs at that time) one of my jobs gave me a promotion (Company truck, gas card, benefits to fulfill a family's needs etc.) that I could not resist in Beaumont so I went that route and sold all my tools. I want to start slow but you know in that kind of work you need practically all the mic's calibers, gauges etc or it would be like trying to run a race without a carb, gas pump etc.. it's all pretty needed at once...well you know what I'm trying to say. I used to be near this guy that wanted to borrow my tools all the time my shift and that got annoying if you know what I mean on that too. Right now business is not as good as it could be for us and the intricate detail that makes working for someone else again a more entertaining thought. Djjab is right about the hourly part, it's not a lot for many people but I could live ok supporting the family on $30 to 35 hourly start and be only 10 miles from home rather than going out on an oil rig etc. CNC machining is even way cleaner than working on the manual lathes off of WWII battleships that I am used too too.

In short, the purpose of this thread was to see if there was anybody out there that used to be in the field and have some of the tools laying around that they could help a fellow out here because at this time I dont really have a couple of thousand to go extended out to buy the stuff but at least it's a start. I'll see you around in a meet sometime and ask you more about the CNC part since they are even willing to train me on that. Yes, I know it involves a lot of math.

The guy offered me $28 an hour to start and I told him that since they/he is offering to train me, I would show him how much I usually accerlate whever I go and even offered to start off at $22 an hour. I know I undercut myself but it's the prestige factor that has proven to my favor in the past whers't employers have even given me raises above the normal pay scale because of my gamble. Thirty dollars an hour to a 15 year old kid eh? I bet he had every video game on the market at his home eh?
