Poor Man's Jack Stands
Especially you cheapskate shade tree types
out there like y'alls truly.
I cobbled up these "jack stands" for use on
an old resto project and they've stood up
to several car projects since, I like them
way better than the store-boughten' kind
because they are very stable, you know, like,
"don't work under any vehicle supported
solely by jack stands".

It would cost you maybe $20 in materials to make
a set that you'd be comfortable working under.
Check it out. You could make them taller, etc.,
if you wanted, I made the base so it just fit
under max floor jack travel (after that, I put
the jack up on stacked 4"x4"s and take another
bite.
Good for projects where you're gonna spend some
time under there, want the weight off the wheels
(like suspension work) etc.
Can I have your Camaro when the wood fails and your in a wheel chair for the rest of your life?
for my personal safety and financial condition.
I actually have 6 perfectly fine metal jack
stands. But, none of them has a base over 8"
across, and this makes a dismal center-of-
gravity. You can't rely on jack stands to resist
a sideways push of any significance.
The vehicle in question has sat happily on them
for 6 months and its predecessor for years; I've
worked under them both and lived. Karate-man
trickery aside, 2"x4"s are not easily broken
against-grain.
But far be it from me to encourage any risky
behavior on anyone else's part...
