If you get Craftsman ratchets, don't buy them in a set. They freaking blow. The individual ones that are like $30 each have worked well for me though.

My father has a Craftsman set that he's had since I was knee-high....
Well anyway, that set has taken some abuse (hammers and such) and they work perfectly (like new).

I've never hard any trouble with any of the tools except the ratchets. This probably wasn't a factor if it was that long ago, quality control standards have changed a lot since then.

I've used hammers on my rachets to get bolts loose. They've lasted so far.

I've never actually broken the ratchet. They just lock up all the time or won't stay locked into their tighten/loosen position.

I always just take them to Sears and they take the bolts out for me

My dad has set from the '60s. They have oil fittings on the ratchets and are much better quality than the ones you get now. I've broken about 3 1/2 inch drive ratchets, one just fell apart while spinning on a tranmission crossmember bolt....the reversing lever hit me in the head??? I swear by my Snap-On ratchets. But, Craftsman work great for the price, just make sure you have a spare (I've broken them at 3am and Sears is "sorta closed").

Have fun!

You must know I am insanely jealous of your SnapOns SmokeFord. One day! One day! What kinda pricing do you look at for SnapOn starter kits? I've got their catelog but they don't list prices.

But I got the starter 425 piece Craftsman kit and think its great. Since then I've added on, but still, no problems.

Wow...dunno how to get a bolt out of a socket if it's stuck that much. Just beat the crap out of it I guess. Put it in a vise.

You've heard the phrase "if you have to ask....". It is reasonably true with snap on.

Go to www.snapon.com and check out their store, prices are there as well. Have fun!

I broke the flip lever on my rachet the other day and returned it. I got a "new" one...with someone's initials engraved in it...I thought it was kinda funny, but it works fine.

Put in a vise face down in the jaws. Don't tighten it. Use a punch from the back side to knock out the bolt, then off to Sears.
