I have a RayTek MiniTemp that I've had for about 10 years and it's holding up great. It was about $100 when I bought it new, it's probably down to about $49.99 by now...

I just bought a Harbor Freight one, with a gooseneck head
and a range that goes up to like 1100F. That was what sold
me on that (instead of, say, the $9.99 mini one they had).
That high a range, I figured I could look at header tubes,
brakes, etc. with it. $49.99 on sale presently.

We use Fluke brand guns and they work really well and are very durable. Unfortunally I do not know how much they are as we just order them and never see the bills but I am sure you can find prices online.

It seems that they are all equally accurate at close distances. What you are paying for is a smaller area of temperature measurement at a distance. The smaller the spot, the higher the price.

I can't see being over 36" from any heat source, so the cheaper ones will work for a home builder, right?

Yeah, but check the specifications on the spot size first. If it says it has a 2:1 ratio, that means at 36", you'll be measuring an 18" spot. It's been years since I bought one, it seems at the time the best ones were like 12:1. I really don't remember, though.

OK, so I'm gathering that the higher the ratio, the more of a pin point accuracy of temp at a greater distance, yes? My head is starting to hurt! LOL! THis is why this site is the best, where do you go to ask this kind of info. If I'm missing something else please chime in.

The site I listed does not have them listed at this time. Their inventory changes so you should check back later.

The gooseneck I got at HF is 8:1 ratio. All I can say
is I got reasonable appearing readings, and the night
sky reads underrange-cold. I haven't tried the high end
or validated it against a thermocouple reading. But it
seems like a nice unit to me. I also like that it uses a
9V battery, not a watch battery like some of the minis.

P/N 94233 if you want to look it up.
