Tempature Guns I'm looking to buy an infrared tempature gun.
I want one with enough range to measure the tempature of the exhaust tube on headers but I'm really not sure how hot an exhaust tube header pipe gets..
The higher the range the more expensive the guns get so does anybody know how hot an exhaust header tube gets?

At idle, with ceramic coated FLPS, my headers are 450-550*. Certainly makes it easy to diagnose which cylinder is missing
I bought mine from Northern Tool for $70 a year or so ago.

Yea, I know.. they don't work well on shiny metallic like surfaces. Something about the emissivity of the material being measured..

Emissivity is a term used to describe the energy emitting
characteristics of materials. Most organic
materials and painted or oxidized surfaces have
an emissivity of 0.95 (pre-set in the unit).
Inaccurate readings can result from measuring
shiny or polished metal surfaces. To
compensate, cover the surface to be measured
with masking tape or flat black paint. Allow time
for the tape or paint to reach the same
temperature as the material underneath it.

surface.

I know I've used tempature guns on brake rotors in the past and my readings were consistant..
