I used aluminum rod from home depot (5/16"). Odd, the right side went right in, I had to fight the left side in all the way. The rod was gouged up a bit
by the time I pulled it out. By the way, you'll want about 24" long at least, more on right to clear p/s pump if you have to fight it in.

I used the JPR tool a few weeks back in my 02 Z without any problems. They slid in and out and worked great and gave me piece of mind while doing the swap. I will be doing my fathers cam swap in his 00 LS1 in the next few weeks we shall see if it goes as smooth with the tools.

why does the JPR tool have one side of the bar milled flat. Also do you have to cut an angle or point on the end of the rod to make it slide in easyer.

I chambfered the end to help from catching on anything. Again, one side really was tight and thus galled - so SS is a great idea.
