You referring to mine?

If so there are many ways to insulate it, they would have insulated it for $1000, it never REALLY gets cold in Mobile Ala, well it DOES because it is so wet and damp here. The builder uses some stuff that looks like plastic with bubbles in it, kinda like a mini version of packaging stuff you see when you get car parts. I decided not to insulate, just gonna buy me a heater to take the chill off. But if I ever decide to, they make panels like sheetrock you can cut and put up, use pink panther vertically and staple it to the 2x4's.

There is a company here in Mobile called Dixie Building Supply, They make the steel and kit. Went up fairly easy(I watched) they buried the poles in the ground, pured the slab around them, the trusses came pre-fab, metal came pre-fab for the most part.

I wanted a "shop" not a "garage"...a garage is like the post above with the three cars sitting in it from the rear..I wanted a "working" shop.

Shop around before you buy, get the local "Penny Pincher" or similar little sale paper, usually have alot of metal building suppliers and erectors in them.

BTW there are some guys in here with some NIIIIICE shops!!!!!!

Go as deep as you can, at least 30. If you pull an engine from the front with a puller you will have room to maneuver the crane around without fighting the wall behind you.

yeah, I know all about that. my garage is 29' deep. perfect for my bench/table, about 8 feet of room, then where the car goes. and that still leaves enough room behind the car for stuff. I got a hoist in my garage. see my very unorganized/crammed garage pics somewhere back in this post. when I took those pics, I was in the middle of an engine swap, AND I brought back a bunch of stuff from storage and had yet to make room for it in my house/basement. I do have all my space back now, but its still not clean and tidy. stuff all over the work table, shelves, floor, stacked against the wall, and so on. thats why Id like to build a large "shed". to keep all the normal crap out there, and let me have my garage just for my work and tools.

Anyone ever figure out what the minimum depth you need to pull an engine out of an f-body using a standard folding engine crane? How about engine and tranny as one piece? I think I’ve got something in the range of 22-24’ and I don’t think I can do it, but I’ve never had everything pulled out of the way and tried it.

I’m probably going to get stuck doing it 2x this spring (stripping the parts car, and then putting the engine/tranny in the new project car), and I’m wondering if there is any way I’ll pull this off without pissing off the neighbors.

my garage is 25x25, I have a 24 inch deep bench in front of the car I could just sneek the engine crane around, I only have about 2 feet in front and in back of the car.

my old garage was only 21feet deep, and I was able to do it that way. it was tight, but it worked. several cars/eng.s that way. one time I removed eng/trans/cradle out the bottom in that garage too. you have to work at an angle when pulling out, and the eng/trans will actually be comeing out over the fender, not the front nose. know what I mean? so the other bay has to be open though, obviously. if you got two cars apart in there, your SOL unless you do the out the bottom. BTW, if your stealing the eng/trans out of a parts car, then why on earth not remove the eng/kmember/susp. as one assembly? you can have it all out in about 4 hours if you take your time. then once that is all out of the way, make a wooden extension for across the front, and set it down on a couple dollys to roll it out and have a flat bed pick it up from a junk yard. thats what I would do.

Don't worry about the neighbors, they'll get over it or move. You have a job you want to do.

Well, instead of muddying this thread anymore, I started a new one about garage space and pulling an engine here:

I have either shop to choice from, 38 lifts total.... It helps to be a manager at the Largest used car sales/service departments in Indiana. I have worked at both locations and there both only 10 minutes from home....
