Well my compressor died, whats the best air compressor in your opinion for <1000 bucks?
This will be used to run DA sanders, body saws, paint guns and wiz wheels.

A lot of guys like Eaton compressors. http://www.eatoncompressor.com They have a good bang-for-your-buck, but the shipping from them was pretty high (for me, it was about $200 to receive the compressor I wanted).

I ended up getting an Ingersoll-Rand compressor on sale from Grainger (I picked up from my local Grainger, no shipping costs ). I'm very happy with it. The 2340L5... 60 gallon, Type 30 pump head. It's the lowest end of their "industrial" compressors. I-R also has the SS series pumps (SS3, SS5), which is high end consumer, which though decent, they aren't as well built as the Type 30 series.

I looked for a few weeks on Craigslist for a used one, to no avail. But of course as soon as I buy one, they start popping up. I'd bet you could find a good one on Craigslist for $800-$1000 locally, if you're patient.

I agree with Camaroholic. I actually sell air compressors for Ingersoll Rand in Texas, but I used to work for IR in Greensboro. The 2340L5 is a great air compressor, I highly recommend it over the single stage series (SS3L3, SS5L5, etc.) especially for what you are doing. The 2340L5 is the same Type 30 air compressor that Ingersoll Rand has been building for over 30 years. Put you zip code in at www.air.irco.com for the number to the Ingersoll Rand Greensboro office (I'm not sure if I can post the number or not). The 2340L5 is a little over $1,000 but it is a great compressor, I actually have a 2340L5 in my shop.

Are any duplex machines in your budget? If they are in your budget then you better be glad that you have a duplex because one is going to be broke down the whole time, because it will be cheap!!! A duplex is normally used when complete "back-up" is needed. I don't think that you need a duplex. Go with what has worked for decades.

I dont have a budget persay, just trying to limit myself to around a grand. The less money I spend on a compressor, the more I can spend on a new welder

I caught the 2340L5 on sale last year at Grainger for $931. I too was trying keep it at a grand as well. It's normally $1250 there (when I bought, I think it was $1125 normally). The only difference I see with the Grainger model is that they put their own Dayton electric motor on it, instead of the one that I-R uses.

Keep looking on Craigslist and ebay... a good condition, used compressor will be your best bargain.

They are good. My Uncle picked up a 60 gallon and a 5 horse I think for 299 last week from Lowes. I bought a Crapsman a few years ago. It is the oilless compressor. I think Its a POS myself. It is Slow and LOUD
