Question What's with the weird tags on some threads?

Here is an example: https://ls1tech.com/forums/gm-perfor...icipating.html

The tags in that particular one are "fablication" and "*****". So what's up with that?

Any user can enter their own tags upon starting a new thread. Start a new thread (but cancel it) and look under the main text body where you type for the tags field. There is also an "edit tags" option on my screen, but I don't know if that's because I'm a mod or if everyone has it.

I don't have the edit tags option on my screen, so it must be a mod thing. I did also notice if I clicked the tags in that thread there were about 5 more with the same tags. I just figured that someone with the option to edit them was being funny, because the tags where not in that thread when it was originally created.

Thanks for the response Sharpe.

Only moderators and administrators see that. Users cannot update the tag cloud and aren't suppose to be able to as the system is suppose to be automatic and run at it's pace, so it won't be 100% in real-time, updated. It's part of what is commonly known as "tag cloud". It was installed a few weeks ago.

So, you're saying it's 100% automated and that thread starters can't create their own tags? That's not my understanding, but I could be wrong. I'm too lazy to create an account just to test.

The evil computer hive mind must not be omnipotent if it's pulling up weird tags. I've never payed that big of attention to them.

LS1BLKSS, See the "tags" box below the thread's last post. I'll add a tag "Toasty!" to it. Tags are a search feature/enhancement. You can search by tags. For instance, click on the Search drop down and notice "Tag Search" above "Advanced Search."

It's at the bottom of the page in the above posted thread. The "*****" tag is gone so I imagine Sharpe removed it.

Yeap. If it only would have had "fablication" I could have dismissed it and went about my business. The ***** tag made me curious enough that I had to ask the question.

That is correct. Moderators and Administrators can alter the tags, but users (even creators of the thread) cannot. It suppose to be automated, but it suppose to do it at a leisure pace so that it doesn't cause resource issues over more important functions on the forums.

Or, if you were asking why only mods can edit the tags, then take a look at eBay. You search for something and everyone wants you to read their ad so they put all sorts of barely-relevant tags in it just to get views.
