What I recommend is going to school to be a professional, I'm currently on a path to become an attorney.

I would have replied sooner, but just got back from a trip.

Some state experience is "preferred", but not necessary. That should not deter you from applying. For example, given a particular candidate pool, it may be better to get the apple from the tree than the barrel.

Pharmacy tech was the way to go a few years ago if you wanted a quick way to earn decent money. Don't know where it is now. Not much room for advancement.

I thought of being an x-ray tech years ago, but it took almost 2 years on the waiting list at Mt SAC to get into. Back then, the way around it is to play a sport, then you get preferential registration. Alot of the classes were impacted. Not much room for advancement aside from special certifications.

Nursing is the way to go. You don't have to really be a "nurse" the rest of your life. I know nurses who have went into Sales making in excess of $80k/yr. base + bonus and commission (easily over $100k). Others I know went into training after working in the field for 5 years, a real cush job, making a salary of over $75k.

Just got laid off Friday from my company I've been with for 2 years (along with 15 other people - 50 were laid off before our group). I was PC Support - which means if your computer isn't working like it should, I do anything and everything it takes to get it fixed for you to be able to do your job... 6 years total helping people in a group setting resolve computer issues. Windows OS mainly, some Active Directory experience, basic networking experience, etc... Also intermediate/advanced at Photoshop [7,CS2], some 3DS Max skills (basic modeling, texture wrapping). I've set up fairly complex AV systems on the side too. Don't know any programming languages though, nor do I do websites.

So... The job hunt begins.

P.S. I also work on my car (simple stuff) and I'm not really afraid to get my hands dirty.

If you are thinking about doing an limited x-ray cert from one of those vocational schools, don't do it. To make serious cash as an x-ray tech, you need to be a full radiology technologist. This is where you do cat scans, MRI's etc. The limited license is useless and you can't work in a hospital. I got a limited x-ray license in 95. My first job paid $11 an hour, pretty sad.

If I had the money I would go back to school for Anethesiology tech. My mom has worked in the operating room as an RN for the last 25 years and she told me that it's the position that's making bank right now.
