Then you can't just pay a fine to make it go away.

You're welcome.
Some kid before me in court the other day tried to use that excuse and the judge didn't allow it. He said the kid showed have proof of correction, whether he owned the car (anymore) or not. He gave the kid 2 weeks to get it taken care of.

I'm almost positive you can't just pay this fine and be done... if he sent you to a ref, then that's what you gotta do. And it's one thing to find a "nice" smog shop to pass you, but good luck finding a ref.... those guys work for the government and their job is to fine guys like us and deem our vehicles in-operable until compliant with state laws... in other words, i'm pretty sure your screwed. Worse case scenerio (and probably what you'll have to do) is put your car back to stock, take it to the ref, then put all the crap back on it again... sounds like too much of a pain IMO

meh.... just sell the car

oh wait, you can't do that... CA requires you to smog it, get it reffed, before you can sell it...

Your Screwed!

that's one thing i don't miss about CA...

Seriously man, just walk in and pay for it. Its not cheap, but its not as big of a deal as everyone makes it seem.

Unless the buyer says that they will smog it...... but then again all they would need to do is do that for like a day or so. but it also looks fishy selling a car really quick just to buy it back.

Did he have a warrant to check your car? Did you let him search? You should have said no you can't look under my hood or anywhere in the car without a warrant.

I agree with this philosophy, but what's done is done.

Hey Mike, look for the obese middle-aged stay-at-home mom, that's who's ratting on ya.
