Putting a 275 width tire on a 8 inch width rim is all bad. Looks funny and will overlap the wheel, if you were to take a turn hard enough the lip of the wheel can pop the tire. Obviously it has been done without issues, but as far as safety goes it is not recommended. I wouldn't risk it the way I drive.
And you dont want 235/55/16s because that was the factory V6 size tire, so those would be narrower then what his car came with and the sidewall is taller which looks funny. The Z28/TA V8 cars came with 245/50/16s and obviously SS/WS6 cars came with more aggressive 275/40/17s.

I'll rephrase my response. Either size were a factory option, V8 or V6, but most had the wider size. My point was, from a performance perspective, why would you recommend something narrower? Obviously if he's in the market for tires, now would be a good time to get something a little wider.
