Default What cable type for positive battery lead?

Hey everyone,

I actually just need to replace the section of cable that fried. Seems like the cable was touching metal. The lead I'm talking about is the one that connects from the rear of the alternator by a bolt to the battery (positive side). What type of cable is that? I'm sure I can't use the same type of low number gauge cable as a stereo system power wire. Should a butt connector work for this type of application? I'm thinking of re-routing the cable so that it doesn't run near the rack and pinion steering assembly, thus making it slightly longer. And yes, I had wrapped up the cable in high temperature conduit, and still it became so hot that it went through the wires in the cable.

Thanks.

I would use 4 or 2 gauge wire, 0 gauge if you have a sound system.

I run 0 gauge from alt-battery, chassis-battery and chassis-engine block

Do you really need to go that big of a gauge? Isn't the factory line like a 10 ga line? The stock gauge wire works fine for most people.

I have a 1500 watt system and a 1800 amp audio battery so the stock wiring isn't enough.

Stock wiring is 8 gauge.

Any places I can actually get it without going online? And, if I'm reading correctly, I can use a thick gauge, stereo power wire to go from my battery to my alternator?

I'm pretty sure you can get it at a stereo shop, just going to be more expensive. Correct.

The stock wiring from the alt to the bat is considered what quality to you? And I think it's 4 gauge, isn't it?

bigger isnt going to hurt, on my old camaro I had 2 gauge routed to the alternator added to the existing factory wire. if you do not have any electrical hogs like HIDs and a stereo system I am sure 4 gauge would be a suitable option and upgrade.

I do have HID's, both headlights and fogs. Also have a stereo system, but it's mostly the subs that take up the most power. I really don't hit the bass that many times though.
