Exclamation Save Carlsbad Raceway **INFO**

Here's some info on the 08/10 meeting with the Carlsbad City Council, regarding saving the dragstrip and motocross track and building a full off road facility instead of the industrial park that is currently being planned.

It was a pretty descent turn out of supports for a last minute notice. We'll find out with in the next week or so whether the city council will add it to their next agenda, and "officially" hear the offer out. The Save Carlsbad Raceway Committee is going to meet with the City Attorney and see if it's even feasible at this point. It's just the beginning of what will hopefully be the process of unwinding everything that has been planned. Good news is that there's no build grid yet for the new industrial park so there's still quite some time to undo the current plans. A lot of it also hinges on the current owner of the land, who is in Texas.

Here's the web site... It's still under construction. Once complete it will be updated with the progress.

Long story but the current owner is a bank in Texas. The operators haven't owned the track in years, they just been running it on a temporary basis until the land was purchased. Current plans are underway to build an industrial park there. There is some state funding available for a race/off-road facility in Southern CA. Were trying to stop the build and get the City of Carlsbad to agree to use the current site for this facility.

i would only help to save it if it wasnt a piece of junk. the track is all tore up and the prep sucks, the stands look like they are gonna fall apart.

i didnt read the website but do they plan on shaping the place up? because they are putting up a new place called drag city east of here that is gonna be top of the line and will get tons of business.

Well... A couple of things. They are building drag city east of us... Its in Banning (right by Palm Springs). So if you wanna run 3 months out of the year (It'll be freaking 120 the rest of the time) plus have an extra 1500 ft of elevation. Cool, do nothing. To me its unacceptable to have to drive 2 hours to go to a drag strip. Yea, the track was beat up.. The PREVIOUS owners did nothing to fix it up. First priority is saving the track. Which can be done. AFTER that goal is accomplished, comes getting the track renovated. But we need everyone's help to do it.

ummm yea.

Again... the people being running the track did not own it. The property was owned by a bank in Texas and they were being allowed to operate the track on a month to month basis, along with the ok from the city. Guess you can't blame them for not doing anything regarding the up keep, it would be like modifying a car your just leasing with no plan of buying out the lease.

Were talking about a renovated facility... no dirt road, pot hole filled return road, or rusting spectator stands.

Read the link... or at least the posts above! All the back ground and future plans are on the web page...

Passing on some of the latest good news...

I have encouraging news to report!

1. We have good information on someone close to The Governor, that may help
us!
2. We have been in Contact with Jeremy McGrath's press secretary late this
evening. She will be in contact with him soon to see how we can work
together to save the raceway.
3. Tony Hawk's Foundation has returned my email, says they would be
interested in saving the skate park, that looks to be buried by several feet
of earth. We will be in contact further.
4. At least 5 Sierra Club members will be on a unofficial walk at the
Raceway, this weekend. To see the site first hand.
5. We have unofficial ( a verbal) support by one of our local Mayors! Soon
to be coming out of the closet!
6. Our meeting with Sen. Morrow is on schedule. Tuesday at 9:00 am., and
the State Park and Recreation Supervisor will meet with us that day as well.
7. Our demonstration is on for Tuesday the 7th @ 7:30 - 8:30 am,
overlooking the raceway, on the construction site just off Palomar Airport
Rd.
.... please please be there... and bring ALL your friends! If nobody shows
up, we will look like real idiots!
Really.....I would Like to see hundreds of people there.
But I will take what we can get!
8. I have been getting emails from all over the world today, thanks to a
post on the Racerx web site.
http://www.racerxill.com/main.cfm
This has been huge for us today!

There are many more encouraging things in the pipeline as well.... I will
keep you informed!
But for now, please concentrate on a spectacular turnout for the
demonstration! I will bring our signs we had at City Hall, but we are also
making much bigger signs so all can see while driving on the Palomar Rd.

Gang, keep working..our efforts are indeed making things happen......
Important item here: We need pledges ....and very soon, we will have the
capability to accept checks, and paypal on the web!
This is huge for us, and we are helpless without it!
Our legal expenses will start soon! This is vital!

If that's the new facility concept, then what's the big deal with "saving Carlsbad raceway" when I see a drag strip there?
Sorry, I haven't been paying much attention to this, can someone fill me in briefly? THanks.

The raceway is closed. The Committee is trying to gather state and private funding to buy the land and save it from being bulldozed for a business park. Hence... Save Carlsbad Raceway. You can find all the info on the SCRC website www.savecarlsbadraceway.com .

Mods... you can un-sticky this thread. Looks like it's a dead cause, unless your a skateboarder.

Dear SCR Supporters:

I have good news for you. Our efforts may have made a difference.

The now buried Carlsbad Skate Park is in the process of being preserved!
It is true, the buried Skate Park built in 1976, and buried for 20+ years,
is being negotiated for purchase by the Skate Board group, headed by David
Bergthold. The owners are sympathetic and are indeed open to saving the park.
The property the Skate Park is located on is a much smaller 6 acre section, and may
be split off & separated in order to prevent it from being destroyed. The
talks are moving forward. I am extremely happy with these ongoing
negotiations. But still, the continued interest of qualified investors is
vital. But it looks like GH Fenton is being very reasonable. I praise them for that.
They are doing the right thing.

As for the remaining 137+ acres that is known as Carlsbad Raceway,
I am afraid that the news is not as good.

THE END - - is in sight for the Raceway.
Grading is scheduled for mid to late November! We have not been able to stop it.

Several events have had a negative effect on our plans to save the raceway.
1. The State of California could not fund the purchase of this property at this time.
2. HG Fenton closed escrow much earlier than originally anticipated.
3. Lack of funding to support our accumulated legal fees.
4. Dooms dayers negative propaganda helped squelch our ability to gain more support.

The Raceway as we know it could be gone in as soon as a week or two.
Only a combined purchase offer of $20 mil could change this.
So far, the indications are clear that there is NO interest, corporate or private, in purchasing this property. So, without interested buyer(s) / investor(s), the 143 acre Raceway is doomed. It is just a matter of days now. Only a miracle of immediate investment activity can save the entire 143 acre raceway. This would indeed be a surprise to me. Time is quickly running out on the drag strip & motocross track.

Because of this, I do not plan to spend any more time on the Carlsbad Raceway effort.
Instead, I hope that we all can get behind David Bergthold and the rest of the Skate guys, in order to help them wrap up the skate park effort. I intend to work to support them. Although there is much to do, and more hills to climb, this effort looks to have success written all over it. It appears that it can indeed be preserved.
The now buried Carlsbad Skate Park, is the worlds first skate park, and for that reason should be preserved. Many young skate boarders will be able to enjoy it.
I know that my seven year old will want to be having fun at this historic facility. And I cannot wait to get him over there. I am very happy that this looks to be moving forward.

Although I am sad that our efforts to save the 143 acre Raceway look to be at an end, I can honestly say that we have indeed made a difference. By helping save and uncover the historic Carlsbad Skate Park we will have achieved a great deal of success. We will have helped preserve something that would have more than likely been destroyed, and in doing so, skate boarders from all over the world will enjoy this area for many years to come.
We can be proud of this. This is very special indeed.

I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.
Your support was appreciated.
You have indeed helped us, and have made an impact.
You are all great.

I hope that we can some day meet up again, at a new raceway, a better one!

Sincerely:
