Anything on the strip around a convention schedule will be ridiculous price wise.
Check out the LasVegas Visitors and Convention Bureau for convention schedules before you book.

There are a lot of nice hotels off the strip.
What are you coming here for and I can probably reccomend a nice one near to what you got planned?
If it's just coming to party, try to remember this.
How long will you be in your room?
You can spend $50-60 on an unknown hotel(offstrip) and visit every major casino on the strip and get the experience they're offering.
Shuttles, trams, and monorail connect almost every major hotel together on the strip.
The Palms, Rio, Gold Coast, and Orleans are extremely close to each other.
But if you really have to stay at a strip hotel:
Money no object-Bellagio
Money somewhat an issue- Mandalay Bay or Luxor.
Money is tight- Orleans or Palace Station
Money is for beer only- Wild Wild West

DO NOT stay at the speedway hotel, whatever you do... Vegas has a big F body club, so you might want to get with them.

I always stay at the Excalibur. The rooms are the most inexpensive for that location on the strip and the rooms are comfortable. It is located in the middle of the strip so just about every other Casino is a cheap taxi ride away. Also New York New York, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Tropicana, and the MGM Grand are a short walk.

When you go to Vegas forget about how "Nice" the room is because you won't be spending very much time in the room at all. (Maybe to pass out or take a quick shower. ) Any room that costs under $300 a night looks like a standard motel room anyway. When you book your rooom, don't use any of the bullshit Travelocity, Vegas.com, or Pricewatch type sites. Just call the Hotel direct, you usually get a better deal.

Stay away from the north end of the strip (i.e. Sahara, Stratosphere). Those rooms are dirt cheap but they are pretty far away from the decent places. If you plan on doing some heavy drinking (as most people do ) getting a room on the strip in the middle of the strip (Like Excalibur, Tropicana, NY NY) is the most cost effective. The money you save getting a room off the strip or at the north end is basically offset by the more expensive taxi rides to where you really want to go.

If you're a low stakes gambler like me, hit up Slots of Fun (close to Circus Circus) for a good time. $1 beer (at the bar), $2 blackjack and if you can park yourself at a decent nickle machine, the servers are very attentive and will keep the free drinks coming.

If you're lookin to get laid hit up The Palms, just off the strip next to The Rio. Its a younger crowd, upscale night clubs beautiful people (mostly yuppies), and for some reason woman always out number the men. Oh.... and they have great video poker too . I've never lost at The Palms.

If you're a high roller, hit up Caesars Palace, The Bellagio, The Venetian, or The Mandalay Bay.

If you're going to see the sites, I can't help you much there. Usually Vegas is an alcoholic haze when i'm there, but I heard that fountain deal in front of The Bellagio is nice.

If you do end up staying at the Excalibur, go to the bar next to the lounge by tower 2. Ask for Idelio and tell him the two crazy Irishmen sent you. He'll fix you right up.

................no, I don't get out to vegas very often.......

That's because they have more hookers working there than any other hotel in the city.
Be there around 5:30-6:00 am and you can watch the parade of pimp rides coming to get their women.
I know, because I worked the grave shift in valet there.
If you don't want to pay to get laid go towards UNLV, where they have about 2-3 decent pubs and tons of college girls.

For more info you can go to www.lvfbody.com and quiz anyone of our members on anything else you need to know.

LOL, forgot to mention that. There are a ton of hookers out there no matter where you go. It is tough to tell the difference between hooker and non-hooker at some of the places you go. If they seem OVERLY friendly and want to buy you a drink, RUN!
