Default CA Smog question

Can I put the CNC LS6 heads, LS6 cam (or hotcam), and an LS6 intake (EGR delete) on my otherwise stock LS1 99SS and after a good dyno tune still get through smog?

I'm trying to figure out how to get more power while still passing visual and smog. I thought about going P1SC or STS, but I know I'll need to get at least $5000 just in parts and by the time its installed and tuned I'm upwards of $7k and with 113,000 on my motor I figured I'd end up having to replace that shortly thereafter if I go boosted. So I figure LS6 conversion (essentially) is about my best bet if it will pass smog.

Thoughts?

You're already screwed for smog if you delete EGR. Your best bet is to stay with the forced induction idea. Just save up and don't rush into it.

I think it's a waste of money to do and LS6 conversion. There are much better choices out there.

I thought with a tune, you could kill the EGR code and it wouldn't show up on the smog test so long as it still passed the sniffer and visual. I can't imagine too many people know the difference between a 99 and an 01.

I'd like to get as much out of the car as possible and still pas smog, so long as the cam wasn't so lopey that it alert a cop and get me sent to the ref.

im in so cal and passed smog twice in my 99SS.

ported heads 10.6:1CR, 222/224 .566/.568 114, LS6 intake, no egr, no a.i.r,
FLP headers, high flow cats, stock SLP cat back. 400rwhp 375 rwtq.

like you said.... get the sensors deleted and ask around for a cool smog shop.... i found one.

good luck.

That's good to know. I guess that might work, I just got into to town a few months ago though, so I got some work to do to find a mod friendly smog place. What about visual, you haven't had any problems with the headers?

If I'm not mistaken, someone recently passed with 228. Can't remember if it was on XE or XER.

Search "smog" and go through the thousand or so posts regarding smog in the last month, it's bound to be there.

I passed with a 224-230 on XER but thats on an LS2 bore. The guy who bought my Black TA with the same cam passed smog as well.

I never would have thought a 228 or even a 224 would have passed. I think I'll definately go that route vice an LS6 cam and see what I can get out of the car N/A. I'm just not ready to dump over 10$ into the car right now and go boosted.

So it sounds like, with the right tune, a 224-228, Ls6 intake, and LS6 based heads I should be able to get through smog and visual.

As far as the heads go, can I get with stage 2 or will I need to keep it basically stock?

Watch the LSA, I would not go any tighter than a 112. 114 would be better.
Watch the total overlap, that will affect smog also, keep around 55 or less.

So any thoughts about what the most RWHP I can get out of an N/A LS1 and still pass CA Smog and Visual?

What about the heads, stick with CNC'd ls6's (the one on GMPartsdirect) or go up to stage II LS6 heads from an aftermarket company?

I think I want the 114 LSA anyway, I don't want it too lopey, but I hadn't thought about the total overlap.

I would tend to agree with that..as far as heads go again it depends on the shop you take it too..some shops will let things through others won't i highly doubt heads will affect your emissions.

400 rwhp in CA in NOOOO prob.....

if i had to do a H/C car again.... id get better heads ..... some AFR 205's....with
around a 11.2:1CR, and id go with somthing near a 224/228 .581/.581 112.
then do a 90/90FAST combo.... UD pulley, LT's, no cats, and a cut-out and you might
see 430rwhp.... then for smog time, just throw on some NEW cats., and at the worst case, have it detuned a little......

good luck guys!

lol, 90/90 fast combo, LT's, no cats and a cut out will ALL fail visual inspection.

Yeah, I think the parameters were pass smog AND visual.
