The highly anticipated Camaro variant was rumored to feature the same supercharged 6.2L engine that powers the brawny Cadillac CTS-V with well over 500 ponies. Without the Z28 in the picture, the still powerful SS edition will be the range-topper for now, and we're expecting power to be just under that of the base Corvette's 436 hp.
While this is certainly bad news for Camaro enthusiasts, it does make sense in the face of $4.25 per gallon gas to cancel a supercharged monster that's likely to be eligible for a hefty gas guzzler tax. What doesn't make sense is canceling the Z28 moniker when it means much more to Camaro fans than SS ever will. There goes the aftermarket for louvers and mullet wigs. Thanks for the tip, Doug!

Wow, not that I could afford a 5th gen Z28 but the thought of it being there would have been nice. They just need to not use the SS name and make the Z28 the LS3 model. Because any car/truck can be an SS, but it takes a Camaro to be a Z28!

i'm calling bullshit on this article until GM officially comes out and says it on the 22nd! and even if GM is indeed thinking of doing this with the Z28, "dumped" is an overstatement, "shelved" would be a more appropriate term since it can be brought back in a couple of years!

Z28 is the Camaro's identity. If you tell someone you have a Z28 and they automatically get an image of a hot Camaro in their head. I really hope GM doesn't screw that up.

Exactly, these days the SS badge is so used and abused it's almost meaningless, everything is an SS.

Can't GM follow through with ****??? It was ridiculous enough the Camaro was going to come out in 2007 (YES 2007, had this argument before and there were articles floating around saying it would be back for its 40th Anniv.) then 2008, then 9, then 10, then later 10, etc...
Now they can't even keep up with their competition and offer a special package (which is what made them suck for years, Mustang had the Cobra, the Bullit, Mach 1, etc... Not the Challenger has the SRT8, etc...)! Seriously, this is how you sell the lesser models, you have a bad *** high option car most can't get but want so they will buy the similar lesser models...
