Because, usually, over time, chrome flakes off aluminum wheels. Your best bet is to get them clear coated.

you should see my chrome wheels. god theyre awful. granted theyre cheap, but if i buy wheels again, they wont be chrome. After the first winter my wheels were destroyed. but maybe i should have taken them off in the winter instead of driving around in the snow with 275 and 295-35 summer tires

They can shine just like the day they came out of the box, it just takes a LOT of work.

That said, I've looked into getting mine chromed, and I keep coming back to the same problem - it is a lot of money, and they can flake over time. When I asked someone about doing them, they told me straight up that their chrome would not have OEM durability...at least with aluminum, I can sand it down and start over. With chrome, you strip and rechrome, or strip and polish the aluminum.

Either way, when you own wheels with polished barrels, you are signing up for a lot of work, especially if you drive them in less than ideal weather.

Use either Blue Max, Simichrome, or Mothers polish, and really soft cloths. In fact, cloth diapers work well.

When polished like they should be the polished aluminum looks way better than chrome does....it just takes a lot of work to maintain that level of shine. But if its there its incredible!

I would love to see them in chrome myself. Nothing looks better and is easier to maintain than chrome wheels just my $.02

If you have the right stuff, keeping polished wheels shiny isn't that bad. I've had 3 sets of polished wheels (I have 2 now) and have maintained them quite well, IMO.

Chrome looks alot more 'plastic' than polished does, and you will lose the sharp machined edges of polished wheels for a softer edge from the extra 'layer' chrome provides.

Its hard work to look good. As long as you take care of them you should have no problems.

I don't have CCW's but I have a question. What are guys doing when you wash your cars and the rotors get that light film of rust on them. Then the first time you drive the car it gets that dust all over the wheels and rust water spots on the barrel of the wheels from when brakes are still dripping.

Get an air compressor and blow off the wheels before they get a chance to rust up.

I wash my car on jack stands, wheels off, and trash bags over the brake rotors. Obsessive compulsive? Yes...but it keeps the barrels clean.

I think I was quoted about $1500 to chrome my Classics. I'll just keep them polished.

just a curious question, no sarcasm, but why would you want to ever chrome your wheels? is keeping up on the maintenance that bad?
