Default Help please 17x11 vs 18x10.5

For the life of me I can't come to a conclusion. On if there is a major impact between the 2 performance wise. I'm pretty sure I know appearance wise I would want to go with the 18x10.5. Whats driving me insane is... well, do I really need the 1/2 inch that I'm losing going with an inch larger in diameter?? I mean is the traction going to be that more significant? If I had the coin to drop on some CCW'S or Iforged for a custom 18x11. I wouldn't have posted this question and would have called it a day already but. Before I drive myself insane. Also to put an end to the madness, I thought I'd ask. The people that I know have the experience and knowledge to end this debate. I'm pretty sure that I will get better answers posting in this thread. Rather than in the appearance section? Because appearance wise I'm aure 18's would fill the wheel well diameter wise a little better. I am also aware that 17x11 out back would look killer. Thanks

I have 18x10.5's on all four, i just bought some 315's for the rear. Traction still sucks if u have any power at all.

Wow!! Seems like every scenario that I have contrived is reality. I have simple mods on my car and. It's seems that even coming down from 20's(yeah I know) to 18's. In a wider width will Still give me traction problems. Will the 1/2 in the 17x11 be that much better though? I am lowered on Sportlines. This will also be my 3rd set of rims and I just want the next to be just right. To hold me off for a while till I can land, to me at least, the next level in rims.LOL

You're not going to be gaining traction from the additional width of the tire, its the height that you'll see the benefit. Tires on 17's have a taller sidewall than those on 18's (maintaining that they are 26" tall over all), the sidewall flexs as the tire grips, the taller the side wall the more the tire can flex and absorb the impact making it hook. The smaller the sidewall, the less you will hook due to less flex or absorption. Width of the wheel isn't an issue, this is why people can cut 1.5 60' on a 15x8 wheel. Anything more than that width wise is purely for looks.

Thanks! I knew there was something in this equation that was missing. Man O man who would a thought after it all. It's just about appearance in the long run.

IMO, get the 18s!

295/35/18s, and the 315/30/18s both will look good, and perform well on the 18 x 10.5s, and you have more tire options!

The tire construction itself will have a bigger influence on traction than whether your running 17s or 18s, 275s or 315s.

So get what looks best to you!

Are you wanting grip on the street of track? How much of each do you really need? The 1/2" in rim width isn't going to mean squat. Like said before the 1" in sidewall reduction will hurt grip. The 18's look much better IMO.

Mainly street, rarely track. This is great and is really helping out a bunch. I'll probably watch the thread out some more. Just in case anyone else adds some opinions or advice.

Thanks again

17x9.5, 17x11 for a bird with 275/315

17x9.5, 17x9.5 for a camaro with 275/285

Birds have a slightly wider quarter that makes the 315 look better then the Camaro. To make a 17x11/315 combo look good on a Camaro I think it would need the rear narrowed 1" on each side. But you'd probably have to mini-tub it to get that to fit... IMO

Looks good guys. Seems like the 18's have the edge a little bit so far. This is definitely going to help me on my decision.

Dont know about that. I love my 335 Hoosiers , w/ 17x11 Zr1 wheels on my 1998 Z28. Lowered 1in. for now but I had them on my 1999 Z28 i used to have with sportlines and looked great. Just rolled the fender lip and a cut down the bump stop down. Just used a adustable panhard bar and had no probs. with fitment. I have some pics, but are low quality

Thanks again
Honestly man, it really depends on how much power you're making. If you make sub 500RWHP then an 18 with a BFG Drag Radial will suffice. Anything over that and you need to get a 17 and most likely an MT Drag Radial to hook. No matter what you do a car on the street will never hook as good as it would at the track unless there is a ton of rubber/VHT on the street to. Make your decision knowing that and you won't be disappointed.

EDIT: If you're spraying on the street, do the latter option. IMO.
