Tire manufacturers make recommendations for your safety. Stick to their recommendations.

They would say no and normally I would to, but nitto is the only tire I would throw on the stock wheels. a 315 to nitto is a 275 to our normal sizes. They seem to not be able to measure the **** or something right.. So I would say no normally... but go ahead most people do it anyways, I know I wouldnt put a 315 nitto on a 11inch rim, way to wide ( the rim is to wide for the tire).

You would be "pissing in the wind". You will be adding extra tire weight without the benefit of the extra tread/contact patch.
I just put some 305 tires on a 10" wide rim. The 12.3" wide tire ended up at 11.7" after mounting on the 'slightly' out-of-spec recommended rim width (10.5" was minimum, 11" was optimal).

you can just run them at a lower psi at the track for better contact

Oh wait nevermind, nitto only makes 275s and 315s for a 17 inch rim

Actually, a 315 Nitto fits a 17x11 perfectly. There's still a tiny bulge, considering the tire is 12.13" wide.

if we're talking nitto STREET tires, I would only put those on a 10.5"+ wheel. DR's, well lets just say i voted yes. The DR's run nearly the EXACT same width as a 275 M/T DR.

i voted yes because i currently have 275 555 in front and 275 555r in back on 9.5 f&r and the 555r are much narrower. i have seen it done by a few guys on here and they will be my next tires.

This would be normal for a normal 315! NITTO 315 TIRES ARE ALMOST THE SAME SIZE AS A 275. I wish I can show everyone this, I compared my bfg gfroce tires to my friends 315 nitto and they were ALMOST IDENTICAL in width! I don't understand how you guys would say put those nitto 315s on a 11inch wide wheel, thats ridiculous. Go to a tire store and see if they have any, you could measure it yourself and see how there not as wide as they say!

Ok. I have a 275/40/17 BFG Gforce T/A KD tire sitting out in my shed. It's not as wide as my 315 Nittos. And here, check out some pics I just went out and took of my 315 Nitto DRs on my 17x11 ZR1's. The tire is obviously not too small for the rim.

If you parallel park, come a little close to the curb, and your wheels hit long before the tires (like the bottom picture above wheel/tire absolutely would), then they are too narrow for the wheel.

Aside from the wheel lip itself, my 315 Nittos look and fit my 9.5" TT2's nearly identical as the 315 Sumitomos fit my 11" TT2's. I wouldn't even consider doing this with any other brand tire, but the Nittos are obviously exaggerated as to their true size listed on Nitto website. Mine measure 10.5" wide at the tread, roughly 11.5" at the largest part of the bulge. I'm going to say that judging by the above pics, yours show that they are the same 10.5" if measured at the true and actual tread width...the part that touches the ground at normal air pressure (and has dust on it), not the part that's rolled around to the sidewall.

What buldge are you talking about? So what your saying is that because you mounted the 315's on a 9.5 you have a buldge in the tread?
I talked to a tire shop about this today and they are pretty reputable and they told me that they would mount 315 nitto's on my 9.5 ZO6 wheels but told me the same thing that there would be a buldge in the middle and cause some wear issues, anyone had that problem?

Do you have any pictures from the back? And are those DR's or regular nitto?

The bulge being referred to, is the sidewall, not the tread. Tire makers call it the section width, I think. On an 11" wheel, the wheel is slightly wider than the tire. On a 9.5" wheel, the tire is slightly wider than the wheel.

Here's shots from the rear, showing what I mean, compared to how they fit an 11" wide wheel:
