Default Wheel spacers - dangerous?

A few people have told me using wheel spacers are dangerous and could make the lugnuts loosen up. I've had wheel spacers on the rears now for about 6 months with no problems.

Any truth behind what they are saying or should I just ignore them?

i think people are against them because they use stock length studs, use the lugnut and only get a few turns in..
thats where i see a big risk.. like a tire flying off..

use the 1/4 inch spacer.
anything bigger than that Id say get longer studs.

I have 1 1/2 inch adapters on the rear of my car. no problems so far. but spacers are ok to use, just dont go too thick and run out of stud. if yu do you will have to get longer ARP studs. my two pennies!

I was actually wondering the same thing myself, maybe you guys can help (sorry for semi-hijack of your thread Bramlok).

Longer wheel studs + correct sized spacer = me using my current lug nuts without having to use open ended lug nuts, correct? Then when I put my drag wheels on, the spacer can come off, and I can run my ugly, but functional open ended lug nuts?

Gaunt, just make sure your closed-end street lugs don't bottom on the stud before they get everything tight and you should be OK. They could bottom on the threads or cap and feel like everything is tight when it isn't. If you check it out and there is no danger of that happening, then it should be OK. The added mounting interface when you add a spacer just doubles the posibility off something coming loose, as long as you are religious about checking your lug torque (especially just after install), everything should be fine.

I've been running spacers for years with ARP extended studs with no problems. Been across country with them actually.

I've got nice Baer billet alum. ones.

you should get better studs regardless of spacers or not
because the stock ones are really weak

we use spacers on or dirt cars and slam them into the walls comign out of the turns and i have yet to have a tire com off due to a spacer. but i have sheared the whole center of the rims off when i run spacers to were the rim comes off the car with no mounting surface.

Adapters are fine to use, spacers are not. Longer studs should always be used with spacers
