Default 315's 0n ss wheels?

seen a guy today with stock ss wheels on a 2000 ss. and he had nitto 315 DR's on them. I always thought that they wouldnt fit, but he says he has been running them for a long time, and they work great and hook way better than 275's.....any one else doing this, or is he just crazy. If i CAN run 315's on my stock ss rims, then i WILL. Any input or pictures would be great.they where not 11 inch wheels by the way, I asked.

SO LETS HERE IT

Many people say it cant/shouldnt be done, but when I had 17x9.5's I ran 315's in the rear and did not have any problems. I loved having a wider tire in the rear, it really gives it a good look. Im really not sure why people say you cant run 315's on a 9.5 inch rim?

Unless you run 16 psi in your tires all the time, then you won't get a nice contact patch.

what if they were used for racing only, then it would be ok to mount 315's on a 17x9.5 ??? I mean they will only see pavment once a month if that. Will i be ok ???

It's not the fact that you can't do it...it's the fact that the tire was not designed to go on a rim that narrow.
Mounting the tire on a rim that narrow will DECREASE your available traction because it changes the shape of the tire by bulging the sidewall to the point that it does't contact the ground properly.
The ONLY reason people do it is to say that they have 315s in the rear. There is no performance gain in doing so. 315s go on an 11" rim...period.

If you can't hook with 275's, I doubt 315's will help much. I may be wrong but I don't think there would be enough difference to notice, unless your going for looks.

well, i dont mean to sound like a jerk, but i believe you are wrong. But 40 MM of extra ruber on both sides is going to help hook up

It would help if that extra 40mm made contact with the pavement, but it DOESN'T, so that is the point. If you don't put it on a wider wheel, there's no possible way that the tread will make contact with the pavement, unless you completely deflate it, and then MAYBE.

it'll look stupid and you won't hook any better like that, either do it the right way or don't do it at all..

stupid question:
315-35-17's versus 245-50-16's

on the track, does the 315 width make up for the sidewall advantage running at say 18psi hot?

there's alot less sidewall to flex, but i'm wondering if its worth the $$ to go to 315's if it doesn't hook as good due to small sidewall?

stupid question, but whose tried both.

Absolutely correct.

I had 315 GSC's on the rear of my old 92 LT1 Vette on 17x9.5's. I got the car that way. I wouldn't have done it myself though. It looked good (a little sidewall flex), but I was going to go with 11's on the back when it was time for tires.

I say go with the right sized rim. 9.5 is pushing it bad, but I have seen people take stock 17x9 Cobra rims and do it, but I sure wouldn't.

I "WISH" someone would make a 17x11 10 spoke SS rim. Aftermarket or not I wouldn't care. Would be nice though

you don't buy a 315 tire for the sidewall you buy it for the width. if you want more sidewall get a taller tire.

I've heard that somewhere that somebody can widen a stock rim. I would love if someone could do that to my stock SS rims. Somebody's gotta be able to do it.

Hey man.. if you find anyone local to widen rims. Please make a post or something. I'd be interested in finding out.

Thanks
Steve
