I am thinking about putting 9.5" on the rear tires. The obvios pro, more rubber on the road = more traction. con, can no longer rotate tires without removing rubber from wheel.

is it worth it?

Do you want a drag radial of some sort or a good street tire with decent traction like an invo? If its a DD I would keep the same size all the way around IMO. I hardly drive my car so having different sizes isnt really a problem since they dont see very many miles.

Pros: more contact with the road more traction, better handling, more aggresive looks.
Cons: heavier, more expensive tires, cant rotate without dismount (I never rotate mine since solid axle rear, should wear even, just buy new ones when needed, but then again i run directionals so cant rotate anyway. lol)

My Opinion: well worth it for the "wow factor", traction. I hate when i see big muscle cars running skinny tires in the rear. just looks wrong. lol.

If yoou put 9.5 on the rear run 275-295s. Why not go 9.5s all around? then you can rotate.

Wide tires = your car might try to follow every line, crack, dip, etc in the road... gets a little annoying but it sure doesn't stop me, haha. That may only be the case if you have big tires on the front too, not sure. I have 9.5's with 275/40zr17 tires front and rear.

i am afraid that a tire that wide in the front would effect stearing. idk...the other downfall, i really wanted to go with the T/A KDW 2 tires, but the widest they offer in a 17 is a 275.

oops...i just realized a mistake. i already have 9.5" on the car, 275 40 r17 Y. i meant putting a 285-295 on the rear. my bad.

275s are fine, but once you get into the 315s and larger tires, the rear will tend to "wander" side to side on rutted roads.
on any road that has depressions in the lane from the car tires, your cars tires wont "sink into" and will instead wander around on them a tad.


other then that, cost.

thats about it..
theres really no reason to rotate tires on our cars, unless your posi isnt working correctly.

on large tires theres also (minor) tire clearance to the wheel well issues, but id assume you would make room for them to clear.

For me wider rear tires is for the "wow" factor. Will it help traction? Yes. Is it necessary? Not at all. Is it fun as hell to watch people say "holy **** those are wide tires". Of course.

That's not thaaaat wide. I have 9.5" rims in the rear with 275s right now and those are just fine. The fronts are 8.5" with I 265s. I follow lines/dips in the road which is annoying, but nothing a little extra traction won't help me forget

In other words, I think you're more worried about it than you should be!

they may be 9" wide at the rim (i never measured them), but the tires are 275/40 R17 (Y) on all 4s.

Looks like everyone covered the pros and cons pretty well. **** rotating tires anyway, the rear wheels should have drag radials IMO, and my rear tires always seem to wear out faster than the fronts anyway....weird, huh?

Pros- Traction wins races, looks sick from behind.

Cons-If your car is stockish its not as *** happy, therefore not as much fun. I can put the stock rear tires on fire with a 1500rpm clutch dump and do huge burns, with the 295s it will barely chirp them.

just stick with the 275/40's...unless you step to a 11" wheel and 315's...why bother.

I've gotten to the point where 315's don't seem wide any more, and am headed to 13" wheels and 345 territory next.

...which was the stock size for that car, and is the proper size for a 17x9 wheel.

I'd base my decision more on tire availability than anything else...the wider you go, the smaller the selection of tires available, and that can get frustrating in a hurry.

Obviously you're going to need wider wheels to fit 295s, otherwise it'll just look dumb when the tires are bulging out.

That being said, I recently switched from 245s all the way around to 275s up front and 315s out back. The car rides just fine, handles much better, and looks badass. I say do it... these cars just look goofy with skinny *** tires on the back of them.

They're not at all, that's for sure. I mean a size 275 tire is perfect for the front on these cars, I would never go any bigger than that unless the car was being used for road racing or something of that nature where using a wider tire could maybe be beneficial up there. But, I have to admit, after a while they do start to look just a tad bit small out back, especially on SS's, but maybe it's just me though.
