Default my big oops

I bought these wheels a few months ago used in pretty good shape, I've owned polished wheels before so I went to polish these up and I got no black residue so I figured they must be clear coated. I wash my car frequently enough that I never have to use anything more than soap and water on the wheels, but it had been a while so I used some wheel cleaner:

the white is etched in, it's going to suckkkkkk to polish it all out

Stip the wheel with aircraft coating stripper and polish. The clear coat is ruined.

I really don't know at this point if they are clear coated or not (they're aluminum not chrome). I assumed they were because polishing by hand it never turns black, but wheel polish on a dremel or my porter cable and it turns black pretty quickly. They stayed nice with no attention (unlike my last set of bare aluminum wheels) so I don't think they're completely bare, I'm wondering if they have some kind of zoop seal type treatment on them

I got them looking okay again, mostly did the face just so they didn't look awful but I still have hours upon hours ahead of me

LOL happened to my buddies welds. Mother's mag polish worked wonders. One small can is more than enough to do all 4 rims.

DO NOT USE AIRCRAFT STRIPPER.

So much for the cleaner being an "All Wheel & Tire Cleaner". When I do mine, I try and keep as little tire cleaner from getting on my wheels as possible cause the way my luck goes, something will end up messed up if I'm not picky as hell. I know it's impossible but I only use the car wash soap and a real soft towel and clean them as if it's part of the paint and body.

You have to be very careful and read the label on the back of the wheel cleaner. If it has any kind of acid in the cleaner it will etch into clear coat, paint or stain the bare aluminum. Be sure to buy a cleaner that is Ph neutral. I personally just like to use soap, water and some elbow grease. I'm not taking any chances.

it says non acidic right on the bottle, but it's my fault for not realizing my wheels were bare aluminum. why they take so much more effort to get the polish black and didn't oxidize nearly as fast as my last set of wheels I have no idea.

anyway:

we're getting there
