Help me choose a tire!
So I placed an order on some forgestar f14's. It's going to take 6-8 weeks to make them. I can't decide which tire to go with, either nitto nt555 or nt05. Background on the car; it's not my DD. When I do take it out, it's only on nice days, which isn't often here in Vegas. I have traction issues that are due to both suspension and tires, but i'll be working on my suspension later. Kinda leaning towards the nt05's. Sizes i'm looking at are 275/35/18 fronts 285/35/18 rears. I've read a few threads but haven't found a clear choice. Any help?

I'm getting 18x9.5 fronts and 18x10 rears. My car was lowered by the previous owner, so I thought 35's might be the way to go without rubbing. Which one would be closer to stock height, 35 or 40?

the aspect ratio has nothing to do with the diameter, it refers to the width. a 345/35 would be tall as ****, whereas a 285/35 is too short. I ran 295/35/18 and they were just right. my 315/30/18's were a cunthair too short

Actually, this isnt exactly correct. The aspect ratio is the tire's sidewall height as a percentage of the width. So, given the same width, the larger the aspect ratio, the larger the overall diameter of the wheel and tire. Also, keeping aspect ratio the same, increase in width = increase in diameter. Follow me?

In theory he could have 335's or 275's all with a 35 aspect ratio which would produce a much different sidewall.
I have a feeling he just misused width and meant height of sidewall; because his explanation clearly shows he knows what he's talking about.

Check out my tire/wheel combo and see if you like the 40 aspect ratio on the front 275's.

Personally, I would go with:
Front: 275/40R18 Nitto NT555 @ 147.98 (DiscountTireDirect.com)
Rear: 305/35R18 Nitto NT555R @ 300 (DiscountTireDirect.com)
I know everyone would like to sport the new NT-05 lineup but the NT-555 lineup is a tried and true performer as well.

02transam/batmobile, your set up is siiiiiiiick! I love it. Although I see that you had to roll your fenders some, correct? I don't want to screw things up so I won't be doing that.

Even if your tires are SLIGHTLY different diameters it will affect your ABS at some point. If you have smaller tires in the front it will engage ABS sooner and you will not have as much stopping power. This may be a negligible difference, but it still has an effect.

does anyone ever actually go to tire company websites to look at the actual size specs of specific tires?
If you haven't, and it matters to you, do so. Thats what helped me decide between 30, 35 or 40, and even which company had the wider actual size for tires listed in the same size. I'm getting 295/35/18's for my 18x10.5's, and each of the brands I looked at had quite different measurements for the same exact size, all info which you can find on their sites, or sites like www.tirerack.com , for example, Continentals 295 measures almost a 1/2" wider than the Nitto Invo. Look up the "overall diameter", "overall section width", etc to see how the sizes will compare.
Here, have fun with this: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos won't help with the brand-to-brand differences, but will atleast let you see how the different sizes compare to others.

I've been reading up on both discount tire and tire rack. I even went in to speak with discount tire. I just get this feeling that they might try to sell me what they are trying to promote this month. I've done sales my whole life, it has made me skeptical to a certain degree. The guy even went as far as to tell me how great certain tires are on his mazda. It may matter, sure, but unless that mazda has an lsx, then I can't really relate.
