Default Performance Loss with 18" ??

Will I suffer from a performance loss running 18x9.5 w/ 275/35/18 tires v/s running 17x9.5 w/ 275/40/17 tires?? All things being equal?? I like the idea of running 18's but the tire selection is a bit narrower

Anything else I should consider???

Thanks.

Exclamation

You may since the rotational mass of a 18" wheel is greater then the rotational mass of a 17" wheel.

But who cares. 18" wheels are for corner carving and "bling" not straightline performance.

I noticed a huge difference when I put on my 18's... I could litteraly tell that they were heavy as hell. They look good and that is what I wanted for the street... now I have a set of prostars for the track

There is an article covering this in the May 2004 Motor Trend. There is a point of diminishing returns with larger heavier wheels.

Well let me ask you this then, Is it bad enough of a difference for me to sell my 18's that I got now and buy some 17's??

I'm not a big drag racer, maybe 1 day a month kinda deal.

Thanks

It also depends on the 18" wheel. If your running OEM Z06's you will probably get better performance with that 18" wheel than you would with 17" TT II's or something else heavy. I would keep your 18's if your not a big drag racer.

The replica wheels are very heavy because of the triple chrome plating. My 18" C5's weight 53-lbs for one wheel and tire. My stock 16" weighed 42-lbs. So, yes you will lose some performance when switching to a bigger and heavier wheel. It's a trade off you make.

What about 18x10.5s Black Motorsport Z06s all around? Better for straight or cornering, better than stock 17x9 SS 10 spoke?

Well mine aren't chrome plated so that shouldn't be an issue

I just got the 18 x 9.5 AFS ZO6 replicas too. Does anyone have an opinion on tire size 245 40 18 or 275 35 18? I'm thinking of getting Toyo T1-S and the tire guy says 245 40 would be better than 275 35 does he know what he is talking about? I want to make sure they do not rub.

the 275 will be right size. the SS tires are 275/40/17 so the width is the same. the 275/35/18 will be almost stock height as well (.07 inches short)

18 x 10.5 in the front would rub very badly b/c my back ones rub. 18x9.5 in the front would be better.

I have 18 x 10s on all 4 corners with 295/35/18s and do not have issues to speak off!! It would be close with 18 x 10.5 especially with a wide tire

Did you have to do a BFH mod? Todd from Tire Discount told me that the set up I'm looking to use would'nt have to modify anything (just staight bolt-on), so long as I stick to 275/35/ZR18 tires.

When I first put the wheels and tires on I checked the clearance in the back and I had about an inch or so clearance all the way in the front area of concern in the wheel well including the lip down near the bottom. I went ahead and just to be safe and havent looked back since. Mind you I didn't hammer very much.

When it comes to the front, the tire does touch the front plastic fender well when i have a full turn on the steering wheel but not on the inside.. just the front to where I wouldnt have noticed from driving.. I noticed from marking the tire and checking it.. but its not anything to be concerned about. And if you are thinking of putting that combo on a camaro... the guy that I bought my wheels from.. Mr. Joe himself.. had this setup with sportline springs on it without rubbing issues.

fenixSS i would not recommend putting 275/35/18 on 10.5 inch rims. i would say 295 as a minimum maybe 285 but def not 275
