I agree. Running wide tires themselves shouldn't be an issue. 245s don't look too bad on the 16s but I imagine the rim sticking out too much on our 17s.

IMO, run the widest recommended tire for the wheels you'll run. This will allow for slightly more side wall flex, and a little more side wall height if you go from a 245/45/17 to a 255/45/17 on a 17 x 8 wheel. This will allow for a slightly better ride and road manners, but with a slight sacrifice in handling compared to running the same tires on a 17 x 9 wheel.
FYI, one tire I'd recommend avoiding is the Pirelli P Zero Rosso. They're a excellent tire for handling and grip on smooth roads, but on less that perfect country roads the P Zero Rosso is terrible with tramlining! Furthermore, they were the narrowest 275/35/18 I've ever had on my 18 x 9 wheels.
