Default NT05R vs MT ET Street Drag on the Street

So, I know there have been magazine articles on this (and they seem to perform similarly at the track), but on the street, which one acts more like a street tires while still holding up to a 500rwhp car?

I have heard the NT05R act more like a conventional tire in corners but doesn't hook as well at higher PSI say ~25psi.

MT hook better at 25psi, but how do they handle driving on the street?

One thing I want is to be able to drop the hammer somewhat and not spin in first and second too terribly at street PSI. But I don't want it handling like a farm truck.

I'm leaning toward the NT05R because it seems like it might give up slightly in straightline traction but doesn't give up much as highway speeds in handling.

I know the Toyo DRs are decent as well, but I don't think they hook as well as either DR. Then there is the R888s as well.

Anybody used both or have a favorite? Am I right in my assessment?

Jake, I love the way mine handle on the street. Before, as you know, I was rolling around on 19/20 CCW's with a 325/30/20 tire in the rear. My Mickey Thompson's ride much better on the street than the tires did on my 19/20 setup. I have not been out in the rain with the Mickey's, and don't plan to. The Mickey's are sticky as hell, hook like a champ and take corners well.

What PSI you running? And that's the 15s. I'd be doing the 315 on 17s with the more street oriented tread if I went MT.

Then I'd say you'll be fine. I'm not sure what PSI I'm running. I'll check tonight. It's whatever the tire shop that mounted them inflated them to.

I had ET streets on my bolt-on T/A. I wasn't near your power range, maybe ~315 rwhp. They would always hook from a red light and they were pretty worn in. I was caught in the rain once with them, don't EVER let it happen. It's downright scary. They did handle very well around corners, I'll probably get another set for my Camaro. The size on mine was 275/40/17 mounted on 10.5" TTMs.

Nice call Jake. Will you have everything done in time to play with it before winter? Nevermind, I see you're in Florida.

Beware of the MTs on the street.

My car made 570rwhp and with the 315-17 I thought something was broken in my suspension it wandered so bad on the highway, up to half a lane. I had Nitto 555RIIs on the front which are very stiff. My suspension is also very tight with Koni's and rod eyes front and back. It is set up to handle, but with the HP I wanted some traction on the street. I swapped my Nitto 555Rs back on and it handled perfect again. I also tried up to 40psi to stiffen the side wall with no luck on the MT DR.

I do have the NT-05Rs now but they have not been tried. So can not really tell you an opinion on them.

I also have a MT DR as my drag set up with skinnies and do not notice the wandering, it was only with the stiff front tires. Then again I expect a lot less with a tall rear drag tire and skinnies.

Just a heads up.

It gets below 40 here. I just won't take it out in the evening when it's in the 30s (which is maybe 5-10 days total).

And it'll be ready. I have to buy a new air compressor. My old one is crapping the bed and I need it to break free the rear suspension and the balancer bolt...

Shouldn't you get advice from someone who has used both tires you are asking about before making a decision?

Nitto gets no respect here and the general consensus is that MT Streets are better at the track. MT streets wear much more quickly, and don't have as stiff of a sidewall. Those seem like pretty important factors for street use. Nitto's are actually work pretty decent in the rain (compared to the narrower stock tire).

I've had both tires with similar power levels. The Mickey Thompsons hook much better on the street, but at the cost of tire life and handling. I would say the NT05Rs do hook decently but handle much better. I ran the mickeys in a 315/35/17 with 470rwhp with a 4.10 gear 6 speed car. Hooked great. I now have 465rwhp unlocked with an auto and the NT05Rs and it hooks just as good from a roll but isn't that great from a dig. They will book on the street if you heat them up where the mickeys hooked much better without much heat in them from a dig. Feel free to ask me.any other questions. Both tires were 315/35/17. Same suspension on both tires which were setup for the street on 30psi.

for what it's worth, i run 275/40/17 et street radials and they seem to hook really well regardless of what speed i'm going. from a dig they hook unless i launch it at higher rpm's...cornering they seem to do pretty well in my opinion...I'm at 400rwhp with a lower stall so I would assume its a different ballgame. I wouldn't even risk driving in the rain, but I wouldn't mind trying the NT05r's for the next set to get a little more tread life

Thanks, Jefro. Good stuff.

The 30psi seems like a lot. Most folks run the MT in the 22-25 range and the Nittos around there too. I wonder if that would help either hook even better, though if they both hook decently at 30, that's good news. I'm sure as you drop the pressure though, cornering capability drops as well.

So, I ordered my new wheels and they should be here next week. Now I just need to make a decision on the MT ET Street II vs NT05R.

Any other thoughts? Seems like my initial assessment was pretty spot on with how the Nittos would perform in relation to the MTs.

Jake, I drove home from the dyno in the rain yesterday with my Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials, and she did just fine. I was carefull because of all the stories I've heard of how bad they are in the rain, but I didn't experience one single issue.

Sometimes it rains really bad in FL, I would go with either the Nittos or the Toyo Proxy DRs.

That's my thought. The NT05 do fine in the weather and the NT05R is the same tread. Plus it has a harder carcass, so it'll handle better. I might give up a little traction on the street, but it's the street. At the track, once I get my new rearend, I'll run ET Street Radial Pros on 15s...
