Default is 315 dr needed for 550-600whp? or will 275 work?

i will need to replace the tires (no traction) on my ws6.
stock 17x9 rims

i would like to run 555r 275/40r17 but will it put the power to the ground?
i have street 255 tires and i have no traction 1-3. i would like to turn up the boost and go 550-600whp

im trying to avoid going 315 as that will be extra cash for a set of zr1 wheels vs just getting new tires.

but if i still wont have 2nd gear traction at best i wouldnt bother with 275

ideally id like to have 1st gear traction when i roll into it.

Depends on many factors but a 275 MT or something similar should do pretty well

what kind of factors are we talking about?

and this is on the street only car. assuming under nice warm/dry weather of course.

car is 98 ws6 5.3 t76 3.73 gear.

and the 555r wont do the job? at 275/40r17?

Well I'm making close to 600 rwhp with a 6-speed and 4.10 gear, and my 315 BFG dr's will stick from a 2nd gear roll. And I know for a fact that a MT drag radial sticks much better than the BFG. You have to remember it's not so much the tire width as it is the tire compound

yes but i was referring to same tire. just size difference.

555r in particular as its price friendly. the mt are pretty pricey.

I think with that power, you've "outgrown" 555R's. I spin them sometimes with bolt on's and 4.11's.

555r is a compromise tire. Rides good, lasts a while but doesn't hook as good as a more track oriented radial. For what it's worth 275 radials have tickled 3.90's in the 1/8, so if you cant hook you need chassis and suspension work.

interesting read-i found that the nt05 hooks and performs better than the 555r. im leaning towards that. and i can get them locally and mounted for $410 for a pair of 275/40r17

anyone have experience with the nt05? at 275 will I hook second?
or will 315 be needed with that tire aswell?

I run the Nitto 555r because they don't hook hard. It helps save the weak rearends in our cars. I run 24psi in mine and they don't hook from a dig but are good from a 20 roll and up. My winter rollers, I can burn them from a 35 roll

what size tire and how much power are you making?

i went ahead and installed 17x11 with 315 nt05 (avoided the r compound since ive read you get around 3k miles only)

im now regretting not getting 555r(or so i think) im not getting any traction 1st or 2nd. 3rd is still iffy. if its warmed up enough it grabs. if not it spins)

ive read that the nt05 are pretty good and grip...but maybe for the lower 500whp guys?
I liked the nt05 since its a dd and i really dont want the car to be anymore sloppy on the turns but if i still dont have traction whats the point.

looking to switch to another tire. i was wondering about the 555r. but based on what you said. im thinking not much difference in 555r vs nt05 traction wise.

perhaps mt is the only way to go. does anyone know how well it handle on the street compare to nt05?

Hoosier Drag radials hook well. They are also lightweight which helps cut down on unsprung weight. I'm currently running the Mickey Thompson ET street pros. I like the fact that they recover like a slick if you need to peddle the car. I've ran Hoosiers in the past and will probably buy another set when the mickeys wear out. All of the drag radials handle well and are stable at high speeds on the street, the compromise is wet weather driving. The Hoosiers, and et street pros would be the worst to drive on. Another good radial that's right in the middle would be the M&h, although I'd call because the sizing is odd on the M&h tires. I ran a set of the 390's a few years back but they measure off section width instead of tread width.

Hoosier makes a 315 drag radial that hooks very well. The only 17 inch drag radial I EVER seen pull the tires with a M6 car all motor. Drive to the track drop some pressure out the tires and have a blast.

Quick Reply: is 315 dr needed for 550-600whp? or will 275 work?
