275/40/R17 Autocross/Street Tires
I have a set of 17x9.5 C5 wheels. I have been searching for a 140 to 200 treadwear tires for this season with no luck. I typically drive the car on the weekends and to and from autocross. I put about 1000 miles on my camaro annually.
So I was wondering what tires and what tire sizes other users are running on these wheels for autocross/street? I have listed some manufactures below that make the correct size but I’m not sold on any of these manufactures. I’m thinking of running a 255/40/R17 in lieu of the 275’s because the availability of the different tire brands that are available.
275’s that would work
Pilot Sport 220 treadwear but over $300 EA
Proxes R1R 200 treadwear at around $200 EA
Nitto NT05 200 Treadwear but after reading countless reviews I would prefer not to go with them.
Federal SS-595 240 treadwear around $100 ea the 595RSR 140 treadwear is not available in 275/40/17
Falken RT-615K 200 treadwear and around $190 EA
Kumho XS is no longer available in the correct size
Hankook’s are unavailable

Toyo Proxes R1R if you need a street tire or a UTQG of 200+ for Auto X class rules. Some shave these tires down for noticeably faster lap times.

BFG Rival, and Rival S (only use the S if NOT street driven, since they will wear MUCH quicker than the non-S will).
That is, IF they have released these in the 275/40-17 size yet??
If not, then yes, the R1R is probably the best choice out there right now.

I think I read the NT-05's fall off a little quicker dirung autcross and such. They are a dynamite street tire. Perfect for a weekend/nice weather car. They are not bad in the rain, but come molded with 7/32nds new with large treadblocks, so being cautious in the rain would be good. I had to back my car out of the garage this winter onto a snowpacked driveway to have some work done. The car was immobile for a few days until the snow melted. Just sat and spun.

Does anyone know if the NT-05s run a little narrower (in actual TREAD width, not section width) in any given size than other max performance rubber, like the 555s/555R2s did??

I run C5 wheels well but the staggered 17x8.5 up front and 18x9.5 rear wagon wheels. I have 255/40R17 Rs3s Version 2s on the front, 285/35R18 rears. They are EXCELLENT once they are warmed up. They seem to be the go to tire for heavier cars.
Another local guy had R1Rs on an EVO and destroyed them very quickly. They seem to be better suited for lightweight cars.

I would doubt it. THe only one known to run very narrow in the NT-55R in 315/35/17. THere is aspecification page on the website that should have all that information. From what I see they are right at the mathematical ecpextation. There is no noticeable curvature that would decrease the tread width aprecciably from the section width (at least not enough to matter).

The NT05 have no grip compared to the newer class of sticky 200 tread wear tires. They wear like iron though. They also run narrow like every other nitto tire ever made.
The R1R melt away instantly under a heavier car like the f-body. Not good.
Unfortunately there are no good tires for 17 inch wheels anymore if you need anything larger than 255.

I just got some BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2s, they handle great and hook good with a tread rating of 340. The BFGs put a actual 10" on the ground vs 9.5" for the Conti all season Extreme Contacts I had before (275/40-17). The BFGs are made in the USA unlike the M/T Street Comp/Cooper RS3-S twins.

I pretty much have the same question/problem. here is my take on your list:
Pilot Sport 220 treadwear but over $300 EA Too Expensive
Proxes R1R 200 treadwear at around $200 EA I also would like to know what experience people have with these, particularly the "get greasy on heavy cars" comment
Nitto NT05 200 Treadwear but after reading countless reviews I would prefer not to go with them. same
Federal SS-595 240 treadwear around $100 ea the 595RSR 140 treadwear is not available in 275/40/17 I'm waiting to see if our size gets released in the 595RSR as it seems to do well on my brother's bmw
Falken RT-615K 200 treadwear and around $190 EA I current have ran 2 sets of these and like them. I get 10K miles +/- combined street, 10 autox, and 4 HPDE events a year. In autox my times are within 2 seconds of a similarly prepped car on R6's and I have much less seat time then that driver. At HPDE events they fall off after about 19-20 laps due to overheating, but once allowed to cool they are fine again.
I started out on some 340 TW BFG's which lasted about 5000 miles with almost all street driving and maybe 2 autox. I also have Falken FK495 whatever number it is which was much better than BFG's at autox and lasted about 8000miles.
