Default Tire size questions

So in a few weeks I will be buying and picking up a 2001 ws6 from a family member. He’s the original owner and it only has 50k miles on it. Anyway, I plan on doing some basic performance mods to start with before I decide what route I want to take. However my main priority is putting new wheels and tires on it. I haven’t picked out a specific set of wheels yet, but I know they will be 17” and probably 10 or 11 inches wide (at least in the rear, I might do a staggered setup). One of my old buddies had a 02 z28 and I know he had some rubbing issues in the rear on his because of his tires. My only question is what size tire I can run before I start running into issues, and if I will need to space the wheel out at all? I want to go to a wider tire than stock but I’m not sure how I wide I can go. I was hoping I could at least clear a 305 but I’m not entirely sure.

First off, congratulations on getting such a wonderful low mileage ride. Please post some photos when you get it.
I just want to comment on keeping the car stock vs going wider with the tires. If you are going to be driving the car hard or at the track, yeah I get going wider, but look how nice the stock 17" are as designed. They look 'beefy' and the high performance all-season tires perform extremely well in our NC environment. A thought to ponder from someone who bought their Trans Am new from right in your backyard in Charlotte.
These are my 17" TT M rims with Goodrich G-Force rubber I bought back in June 2022.
Whatever you get, enjoy!!!

If your going 305 - 325 in the rear a adjustable pan hard bar is a must.

Personally I'm a fan of 275's square setup.

If you are going 315 with 11 inch wheel you must have the adjustable panhard as @98CayenneT/A said. Also depends on you BS if you will have to do any modification. I run 17x11 with 315's I had to massage the inner finder a tad.

That is sweet. What size rims and tires did you put on? Any spacers needed?
