Nittos: Why so cheap?
Because they're drag radials and wear out fast?
I know, a newbie question, but I don't have anyone else to ask.
They are also probrably cheaper to produce than a regular tire. Think of some of the R&D and production costs that go into the tread technology of a regular all around tire or rain tire. Nittos are pretty simple and to the point.

Are they a practical choice for a daily driver? I mean, i know they're not gonna last too long but 15,000 miles is pretty good. How long will the rear last if i dont go to the strip?
Are they safe to drive on for every day use? I know I should be extra careful on them in the rain but are they just unable to be used in the rain or what?
As far as the rain. Horror stories are out there but I have never had an issue with them. I actually find that it takes alittle effort to break them loose in the rain but, I wouldn't be doing 75-80mph on the highway in the rain with them.

I was gonna go with the 555rII's because they were a soft race compound.
My only concerns were how long they would last and if they would be safe to drive on in the rain.
SInce they would grip so much better, i figured that the short life span would be worth it, I mean they're almost only half as much as the regular 555's too. If they're about half as much and the wear out a little faster then they seem to be worth the money.
Is there something that I'm not seeing here?
By the way, the look of drag radials on the street is awesome and worth something in my opinion also.
