Default A good reason to drive on DRs!

After this weekend, I think my M/T drag radials are going back on the Z28 and staying there for the summer. With the regular radial tires (Kuhmo 712s), this car spins first gear like nothing and will continue the spinning through most of second gear -- till somewhere over 40 mph. Probably like most other LS1 F-bodies. This is all fun and good in a straight line, but when the car is a little sideways in first from pulling out onto a road and then speed shifting into second things get interesting in a hurry. I got really sideways and had to quickly shut down before the car could come around further than could be saved!

The M/T drag radials stick so well that these sort of near-off-road-experiences will not happen!

They do have a little more sidewall flex, but I don't need to be cornering like a fool either.

Those 712's have a history of being junk.

How about drive more sensibly on the road? . . . .

Using drag tires daily is not a wise choice, because rain could catch you in a very bad way.

Those are not good tires either, or so I've heard. GY GS-D3 are supposed to be great in the rain.

I've found that they can be even more grippy in the wet. I just got through using up a set of 275 Nitto RII and 315 Nitto R and they were the best wet weather tires I've ever had. I couldn't believe how hard I was accelerating on wet pavement. The down side is that they don't have much tread. I wore them out in 6K miles. Even partially slick, they will still grab like crazy on a wet road. The big thing about them is when the tread is low and there is standing water, that's when they can get dangerous. I have to watch my speed in the rain, but once the rain stops and the road has no standing puddles, it's super grippy again.

I've heard the BFG Drag radials are not good in the wet with or without tread. I can't say for sure as I don't have any personal experience using them.

I can't keep spending $800 every 6 months for Nittos R's, so I'm going to try the GY GS-D3's. The 315 size is a bit more expensive, but they should last much longer and therefore save me money in the long run.

Keeping my DR's on the back and my skinnies on the front makes me actually drive a little better. I'm more cautious on the curves and such..

With just a lid and cutout I burn up all of first and get sideways on second when racing from a dig. Im hoping to get some drag radials in the next month to fix that problem!

Exactly my first thought, as well...

What do you expect the car to do if you go around speed-shifting into 2nd while taking a turn onto a road?

OK, a little more back ground...just trying to give a little advice on what can get the car out of shape.

Turned left onto rural highway and rolled into the throttle through the turn. Car gets a little sideways in first gear, but the big difference is the car is drifting to the right -- whereas when taking off in a straight line, the car drifts to the left. So when I quickly grab second gear and continue to spin, the car swaps extra far to the left. This caught me by surprise, exspecially since it did not drive out of the drift. So I let up and the car straightened out.

As far as the "drive sensibly" suggestions:

This car is my "fun" car. I drive it about five miles a couple times a week around the country roads near my house. I have a nice plebian-mobile for my 300 miles/week of commuting and regular driving. This car is for driving in a spirited manner once in a while to have some fun. This is the first time the car got squirely on me in probably over 100 WOT jaunts so I thought I would share the experience and what a solution might be to avoid it -- other than the "don't do that" advice.

Why even have one of these cars if you don't jump on the gas almost every time you come to a stop or even slow down?

The Kuhmo's like the stock F1's are pretty much **** tires. High performance Summer tires would be fine. Hell I can barely even light the tires up with the D3's. I heard the BFG KD's are pretty nice too.

I use the Goodyear Eagle Ultra HP Plus tires on my formula with great wet road traction. The tires hook pretty good in wet and dry conditions. I do have an auto though so I guess that helps.

I like my Firehawks, they hooked decently when my car was bolt-on. Now with a bit more power from the cam etc 1st gear is junk, and so is second lol. Nittos are coming my way

Gy F1 GS-D3 - best street tire for the money, other wise spend even more cash for a nice set of Mich. PS2's For the more budget minded, Nitto 555's and Kumho MX's are great choices.

i have the 712's and they spin constantly. I gunned it one time pulling out of my street and my car went completely sideways. I tried to save it and I had it for a second then it swung the other way and then I went up a bank into someones front yard. BTW it was the day after christmas this year, my mom was with me and I was 16 at the time, not good. I would credit that $4500 incident to the tires because that shouldve happened.

Ah, powerful cars and youth, it can be a deadly situation. I would seriously suggest going to a big parking lot when it was empty and wet and practice sliding the car around. Learn to not overcorrect or reduce power too much. You have to work past your natural instincts to want to slow down and instead learn to drive through it. It can take years to get used to it, but with practice you will be able to anticipate an oversteer or understeer situation and react instictivly without even thinking about it. Plus it's fun to practice.

BTW, you could benifit from better tires. You shouldn't have to constanty work at keeping the car on the road. Maybe even mom would help with a little loan so you can get high end tires.

Yanno...... I never really thought drag radials made THAT much of a difference...... but I put some falken 245/50/16's(on my stock wheels) back in the winter of 03/04 and left em on till early spring and drove the car some. I stopped one day just gunna try em out from a 5mph roll........ HA HA I left some black marks about 150 feet long and it literally spun all the way into 4th gear(just stayed in it and let her keep spinning). It would have been a GREAT picture if I would have had some1 around to take a pic.

I have goodyear gsd3s and they are seriously the best dry/wet tire Ive ever driven on.. Go on tire rack and look at how they are rated and the reviews they got. They are not joking about what they say either. Back when my car was a low 12 sec high 11 car I could still give ita little less than 3/4 throttle and dead hook in the rain in first gear. Also they last longer than any tire that sticks as well as they do if youd like to see what they look like just go to my site in sig
