Does anyone know how much horsepower it takes before 245 size tires pretty much become useless at the track?

350? What do you mean by useless?
I got rid of the stock 215's on my 3.4 and went with 245. They are the perfect tire for the HP.
I had 255's on my 3rd gen, and they were pretty useless after I put in the 383 (which was pushing out just over 400 hp).
The GSC-CSs were better, as they were soft compound shaved tires.
I believe that even GM went with bigger and wider 17" tires with the SS models, right?

BFG KDWs here.. useless on stock car... MORE useless with just headers and exhaust..
they just spin and spin and wear and wear.. the fronts are nearly 90% tread life while the rears are like 10%.. and i bought them all at the same time..

245 kdws on the goat and I can burn 1st and 2nd, shifting into 3rd hard will spin, and shifting to 4th will light the traction light... I think the cars stock are getting **** poor times because of these junk tires, but I cant bring myself to replace tires that still function fine. I will probably end up canning the stock wheels for 9.5" wide ones anyhow.

245 all seasons with F-13 cam, headers, 4.10s, and heads soon. Im still alive. Some extra weight in the back goes a long way towards keeping traction.
Im not saying that ive got good traction or anything close... But the extra weight keeps me right on the edge of dangerously unsafe, rather than plummeting into it.

Personally, I kinda find it fun to be able to spin the tires. There is no reason you can't go plenty fast on narrow tires if you just use a little discretion while launching. In the Oct. Hot Rod there is a short mention of a '69 Corvette running 10.99@128mph on stock bias plies. Its really pretty hard to define the term "useless" when it comes to tires. If you are actually serious about racing, get a 15 inch bias ply slick, but if you just drive on the street, just go with whatever looks good and makes a good squeeling noise.

245/50/16 KDWS tires with about 24k miles, still have plenty of tread left but traction wise, suck HORRIBLY. I have a 106k miles on my stock horrible clutch with stock 98 hydraulics and it STILL looses traction in 1st, shift from 1st to 2nd, and barks 3rd and 4th. My best 60ft. is a 2.19 and I'm running 8.85 @ 85mph because of the lack of traction.
