Default Stupid idea?

Do you think its stupid to put Pilot Sports out back 315/30/18 and GS-D3s up front 285/35/18?

My first question is why are you considering two different brands?

I want 18x10 and 18x11 wheels.....285/35/18 would be perfect up front and 315/30/18 would be perfect out back.

Unfortunately there aren't many tires to choose from in the 315/30/18 size
Michelin Pilot Sport
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico
BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial

The Pilot Sports and Pirelli tires both have a matching 285/35/18 tire, but the Pilot Sports are horrendously expensive, and I haven't heard much about the Pirelli tires. Basically substituting the GS-D3s up front instead of Pilot Sports saves me like $150....Geez I just with Goodyear would pony up and make a 315/30/18

I know, "Ya gotta pay to play"

Well apparently BFG makes the KDW2 (new tread design) in a 315/30/18, but of course they don't have the 285/35/18 They do make a 275/35/18....hmmmmm

btw the 315/30/18 is not listed on tirerack or discounttiredirect, but according to BFGs site they do make them

search continues

The 275/35/18 BFG will still work with a 10. It's a 10.8 inch wide tire. You'll just have an almost even sidewall. But even so, here's a link to the tire size chart for the G-Force T/A's on BFG's website:

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...rce_ta_kdw.pdf

Is there any reason why you wouldn't consider running a 285/30/18 up front instead of a 35 sidewall? If you switched to a 30 sidewall you could have the widths you want all in the same brand.

I want the tires to be as close in size as possible. 285/30/18 is 3.9% different to 315/30/18 whereas 275/35/18 is .5% difference and 285/35/18 is 1.6% different.

I am leaning toward the KDW2s right now, they've got a sick pattern. They should be pretty good in the rain too. I am most concerned with how it fits the wheel, the absolute last thing I want is a tire that looks "stretched", actually prefer it to be a little "fatter" to protect from any possible curb rash.

When you say "almost even" do you mean a little on the fat side, or a little on the thin side? I am guessing thin.

I mean that the sidewall will sit almost flush with the lip of the wheel. If the friggin search function was operational right now, I could post you a link to another thread where a guy put 275's on a set of 10" American Racing Rebels. The tires actually fit very nicely.

IMHO, splitting hairs over whether or not to go with a 275 because you could potentially save your wheels from curb rash if you ran a 285 is a lost cause. Whether it's a 275 or a 285 tire, if you ding a curb you're gonna scrape either way. You can't plan to avoid every potential disaster in life, so make it easy on yourself.

I can't stand mixed brand tires on "normal" wheels. Meaning street wheels not drag wheels.

Well I am not so much concerned with curb rash, i'm careful with that stuff and I no one else really drives my car. I am more concerned with the look.

Right now my best choices would be Pirelli's for $1150 but from what I read about them, they don't last too long and aren't that great. Pilot Sports for $1400, and Pilot Sport 2 for $1440, or the BFGs for probably 1K (I don't know how much the BF 315s are)

On LS2.com I actually found a pic of 18x11 with 295/35/18s KDW NTs and it looked good enough, maybe they run wider than advertised

I'm pretty sure that 315/30 is a DR...better check.

They have both, the DR and the KDW which according to Discount Tire is a new tire and difficult to get. Hopefully by early 2006 they are readily available
