The search didn't want to cooperate with me on this one.

How can you ensure you will get the better tread design? There are 2 versions of this tire. I want whichever one is better for maximum traction. I would like to run a 315/35/17.

Also, do these tires feel "floaty" at speed (40-60mph range) and/or mushy around corners? Basically how are they to drive on (no rain)?

man i have had to sets of them that size on my car as far as driving good weather they are fine they really dont feel that much different than a average z rated tire i guess cause theres not alot of sidewall on that size low profile whatever you call it. as far as rainy weather i really never drove in it alot but the couple times i got caught in it they were a little slick at much speed not terrible though just use common sense around turns stuff like that they really didnt last real long either i was hard on them though 5000 miles or so maybe not that much. as far as the tread i cant answer that i didnt know there was two look in the summit and jegs or check tire rack .com they all have them but i would by some heat the fire out of them on the street they do pretty good if your not making 500hp something like that

No they ride and feel just like a regular tire but to gain the best traction in race conditions you will want to drop the tire pressure for better traction.I have user the 1st edition of the tires and they do well as for the other i do not know or have i heard.

as far as i know the new tread pattern is only available in 18". i could be wrong however.

^^^correct. The 315/35/17 is only available in the original tread pattern and they're only putting the new tread pattern on 18" diameter sizes and a couple real skinny 17"ers (like 225mm). Both designs supposedly share the same tread compound, so there isn't a "stickier" version. I love my 315 bfg's, they look mean as hell, don't wander at all at highway speeds and are some sticky sum-bitches.

Good, cause I prefer the original style.

Its good to hear how they ride, because I heard the opposite from a local guy who said on his Cobra they did feel floaty all the time and he ran them at 30psi, which is too high anyway unless you want to wear out the center.

I've got the original tread pattern in the 315's on my Z-28. So far after 4,000 miles of driving on the highway and through the mountains of East Tennessee I have plenty of tread left to see about 10,000 miles of total use. They ride good, about the same as any other tire with such a thin sidewall. They handle extremely well, I hit Deals Gap which is the most curvy road in the area, 318 switchback curves in 11 miles and have no problem running down a stock C5 vette. I love these tires, the width is just sexy. I highly recommend these even for a daily driver.

I'll agree with the rest of the folks on here that like them. Best tire out there for a 17x11 rim running street/strip .. IMO.

What size were they, and what didn't you like about them?

Once they're wore out after about 2 or 3 years, do not use them on the street. I grew comfortable driving with mine every day then I was driving in
a light drizzle about 30 mph up hill and the car started spinning and threw me in a ditch on the other side of the road, luckily there was no oncoming traffic.
I went home and put on my street tires. These tires were almost bald so don't
drive on old DR's and they wear out in a hurry.

This car doesn't see rain at all so these will be the right tire for me I think. I NEED more bite than the Nittos can offer and a set will last me a while because the car is only driven about ~5k/year.

The BFG's are a MUCH better tire for traction. The only thing a Nitto has going for itself is they last longer and are better in the rain over the BFG. Nitto's are better than any Z rated tire out there but are last in the list when it comes to a drag radial. MT drag radials worked the best for me on my 15" wheels I just wish they would see the light and make the 315/35/17 until then BFG's gets my vote and you can get 5,000 miles out of them. My car looks like a smoke show with Nitto's on or off the bottle so I know what you mean when you want more bite the BFG's will help you alot.
