Default Am I in trouble? Does tire section width measure larger when ... *pic*

My BFG KD just came in, 315/35/17s for the rears.
I measured my current Yokohama AVS Sport that are on the car now, and from the best I can see, they are 12.4" wide from bulge to bulge, meaning the section width, not the tread width. Right now I can just barely put my finger between the tire and the closest part of the inner fender well, I actually have to squeeze it in there, and I have small hands!

Well, not mounted on a wheel, laying on it's side, this is how wide the KD's are.

Good Lord, I hope they won't cause problems!

Any other people running these on a Z28?

Yikes, sounds like youre gonna have to get the BFH out to make those fit. Those tires should be sweet if you can make them fit. What wheels are they gonna be mounted on?

KD's are big. A little BFH and all will be fine. Assuming 11" ZR1's with a 50 mm offset.

Yeah...they are going on AFS ZR1 wheels, 11", 50mm offset.

This is by far the widest tire I have had on these wheels. First ones were Dunlop SP Sport 8000, had to use the BFH on those, then had to use it again when I put the Yokos on it....I hope I won't have to do it again.

Maybe they'll help with my traction problems a little?

I am running the BFG g-Force T/A KD 315/35ZR17 in the rear. I did not have to BFH that much.

When I first got 315s, they were Dunlop SP Sport 8000s which came with the wheels, I had to do some BFH for that, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Then I got the Yokos and I had to BFH all over again. I just really surprised how much wider these are than the Yokos, I thought for sure I was done with BFH. But I guess I'll find out tomorrow when they'll mount the tires. I am bringing my trusty can of rubberized undercoating for sure!

I am also wondering about the remnants of my bumpstop mounting tab which can be seen here:

That thing barely cleared with the Dunlops, with the Yokos you can hear the tire squeak by when the car is lowered from being up on the lift, and I think for the KD, I just might have to have the thing sawed off completely. Fun Fun!!

if they lift the car from the axle and not the frame the bump stop shouldnt be an issue. just have the car jacked up from the rear and your ok.

Actually, the BFGs never rubbed during dd, but only at Road Atlanta under extreme cornering. BFH'd anyway.

Well....the tires are on. They have a good tire machine, so it only took one guy this time to put the tire on the wheel....had it on there in no time. The bumpstop mounting tab was trimmed before, but this time around, we cut the whole thing out to get proper clearance. These tires are definitely wider, and I just didn't want to deal with the hassle anymore, so he used three cut off wheels to get the rest removed. Now clearance is no longer an issue. The rest of the fender well we left alone, and so far no rubbing.

I'll have some pictures of them mounted later.

I am relieved now.....wasn't as much trouble as I expected.

Yeah...the mounting place was my local dealer. Including tax, an oil change with Mobil1 Synthetic oil and filter, mounting and balancing it was 150 bucks.

It's not recommended that I work on my own car...since I am the king of cross threading. The only mechanized form of transportation I touch is my lawn mower! LOL.

These are just crappy pics that I shot real quick. Gonna have to take some decent ones when the car is clean.

looks awesome. Meats always looks badass tho. So are there any negative affects from cutting the bumpstop off? I mounting 315 GS-D3s this weekend and wondering what type of trouble ill get myself into, thanks.

Most likely the same trouble I was in....hehe.

First of all I am hoping you're running 11" wide wheels!

The GSD3 is at least as wide, if not wider than my tires, so if this is your first time mounting those wheels and tires, then you got a bit of work ahead of yourself. The bumpstop per se is easy to remove...two bolts and it comes right out. The problem remains though after it has been unbolted since the mounting tab is still there.

The bumpstop is obviously a safety feature, it's there to keep the axle from bottoming out and causing damage to the inner fender. Even if you keep the bumpstop in place, which you can do since it only becomes a problem when the car is lifted by a normal body lift, so lifting the car with the suspension compressed will make the bumpstops a non issue as far as lifting the car goes, it will still not protect you against damage when bottoming out since the bigger tire and wheel are much closer to the inner fender, and the bumpstop will not engage the axle in time to stop any more upward movement from occurring. If you are careful and don't get the car airborne, like me, the bumpstop is really just useless weight.

Getting 315's back there and still having a functional bumpstop is pretty hard to do. Either way, you will always have to lift the car so the suspension is compressed. Due to my torque arm crossmember, and a few other things under the car, I can't drive on the drive on lifts where the car can be lifted by the rear end, so that's why I chose to take the "cut it all out" route.

If you have the car lifted from the axle you dont need to cut the bump stop. I have 315's and my bump stops.
