I was just wondering if i would be able to fit 275/40/17s on a 11" wheel, i know they will fit on my front 9.5.

Yeah im not good with words like that to be honest lol. But are you saying technically no? why, they have to much of a rubberband affect when they stretch accross the wheel?

 

hes saying ya. they'll fit, but they wont look good.

 

thats good tho, im going to buy a set then, that way i have 2 sets of fronts since the price is right, ill put them on the rear to get me buy if i havent saved up enough money for 315's by spring..

 

they do this a lot with the import crowd where they run tires a bit too narrow for the rims ... supposedly good for cornering 'cos not as much tire flex ... VEE DUBB!!!

I'd just fork out the extra $ for the 315s. Thats the whole reason behind having wide wheels.

What? I put 275's on my 9.5 in rims. I put 295's on my 10.5 in rims. These are the perfect fits.

I don't see how you could reasonably fit a 9.5 inch tire on a 11 inch rim.

 

The original question was if you could mount a 275/40 on an 11" rim. (A), the Tire Rack manufacturer's charts say it's OK. (B) You divide 275 by 25.4 to get the tire section width in inches, and the answer is 10.8". Why wouldn a 10.8" wide tire not work well, or look good, on an 11" wheel??

 

A tire who's tread width is narrower that the overall wheel wheel, IMHO looks terrible . . .

 

Looks are one thing, functionality is another. Back in the 80s, I ran an oval track car. The tires we ran were 26" in diameter, with a 13" tread width. The rims were 15" wide. Maybe some people think it didn't look "right", but it allowed the sidewalls to remain perpendicular to the track, for the greatest cornering force. It was function over looks. Ever look at a Formula1 car? their rims are easily 3-4 inches wider than the tread.

If you want to talk looks, I think that there's nothing worse than a tire whose sidewalls are "pinched in" to fit on the rim. In other words, a tire that's mounted on the minimum width rim for that particular size of tire. BUT, that's srtictly my $0.02 worth.....

 

I think we all agree with that, BUT in this case the OP has 11in wheels, so the "pinched in" really doesnt apply. Like mentioned above. The whole reason for having 11in wheels is to throw some 315s on the back, not throw some 275s on, rather pointless IMO.

 

I wonder if there would be any benefit to running a 275 tire on an 11" wheel. Would the tread be spread out more?

If someone had a pair of 275 tires and was buying wheels for them, is there a benefit to putting them on 11" wheels rather than 9.5" wheels?

 

from what i saw above the only way anyone can see any advantage in them is if you were to road race or auto cross for cornering purposes so the tire will not roll on the wheel. Which is true from my years of circle track racing. If you were using them for drag/traction or look youd definetly not want to run them.

 

Meaning that a 9.5" wheel would outperform an 11" wheel with the same 275 tire?
