New components installed today, sounds like A$$!
Sounds INCREDIBLE when it's cranking. But down low it has all kinds of hissing, engine noise and popping in the coax's.
I kept my Monsoon Head unit, is there any way to get rid of these noises and keep the factory head unit?
Do the steering wheel controls still work with an aftermarket HU?
Thanks!
Dan
Since you are using the stock head unit (no RCA outputs as far as I know), I'm guessing that your amp has speaker level inputs? Or are you using high-low level line converters to get the signal into the amp? If you're using line converters, you'll get more hiss no matter what. You can try higher quality converter units if you want which may help some.
The other thing you can try is to check the gain settings on your amp and above mentioned line converters if you have them. If you have the gain cranked all the way up on one or both of these, you can get some hiss at low volumes. Back the gain off to about 3/4 and adjust your head unit volume accordingly to see what happens.
With the gain all the way up, it's kind of like turning your TV volume all the way up when a DVD or tape is on pause. There is no sound comming out, but the amp is stil trying to put out a bunch of power with no place to go.
If none of this satisfies you, you may be headed for a new head unit.
Forgot to mention... these ideas may take care of the hiss. The popping and engine noise is more than likly a ground problem. If you have line level converters, they are a great place for ground interference problems. Also check where you have your amp ground wire connected. Make sure it is far away from anything electrical - tail lights, dome lights, door switches, power antenna, etc.
The wheel controls can be made to work, but last I checked, it's expensive.

1) It's cheap to make your steering wheel controls work with any IR compatible aftermarket head unit. I have one of these I use with my Eclipse 54420 :

2) Definately run the speaker wires on one side of the car and power/ground on the other. Makes a big difference in RF noise. Also the converters will cause a little noise. Get an aftermarket head unit to realize the full potential of your new setup - your ears will thank you because the stock head unit is a turd in disguise.

I was driving this morning, hit a sharp bump and ALL the undesirable noise went away 100%. I mean everything. It's crystal clear now.
But, when I start up for the first time the crap comes back for about a minute then goes away for good, until I shutdown again.
So what the heck is loose?
Thanks
