8.5? thats a lot bigger than double din. you sure he doesnt have a carputer or something? i've never heard of them making something so big.
you could go with another alpine that says its capable. does the iphone have bluetooth 2.0? you could stream from that.
honestly, get a double din with a usb or sd card reader and put music in folders. then its always there, and not draining the phone's battery, and you dont have to hook it up everytime you get in. and easier to control while driving. i use to do that but it got old fast.

The Kenwood DNX series (5120, 7120, 8120) supports hard-wired connection to an iPhone 3G using their KCA-iP300V adapter. That same adapter may work with other Kenwood models as well if you don't want a double DIN head unit.
The DNX5120 with the KCA-BT200 bluetooth adapter and firmware version 1.61 also works with the iPhone for a wireless connection. That firmware version is quite new and may not be the version you get with a BT200 adapter but it's available for download.

agreed i have done both a 5120 with the bt200 and an 8120 with the BT built in and used the kca-ip300 cable and customers loved both setups with iphones

The damn firm ware has to make a difference on iPhones. I might just stick to using a jump drive for my music in my car.
The iPhone just looks cool more than anything. . . . Apple still sucks bawls.
